Khuliso’s Addo Elephant Trail Run (76km) for Polio Eradication

Personal message

I, Khuliso Mulaudzi, a 4-times Comrades Marathon and 3-times Two Oceans Marathon finisher have been drawn by the lure of the wild to run the 76km “Ultimate Addo Elephant Trail Run” through the world-renowned Addo Elephant Park, on 16th March 2019, on behalf of Rotary Club of Port Elizabeth to raise funds for the Global Polio Eradication Initiative.

The course will take me through some of the most remote wilderness in the Addo Elephant National Park, through areas that cannot be accessed in any other way. The race route will test me both mentally and physically, and I will be challenged to run on a wide range of terrain including single track trails, 4x4 tracks and old jeep tracks within the park itself, as well as some stretches of dirt road. I will encounter a large number of river crossings, and will also face some challenging climbs, with expansive views at the top of the mountains that I believe are simply amazing!

Similarly, the eradication of polio is one of on the world’s toughest health challenges - we must stop transmission of wild poliovirus in the 3 remaining polio-endemic countries: Afghanistan, Nigeria, and Pakistan. We must also keep other countries polio free until we achieve certification and officially eradicate polio. In January 2017, Rotary International gave US$35 million in grants to end polio worldwide to their partners WHO and UNICEF for polio immunization activities. This funding was provided for technical expertise and social mobilization in nine countries across Africa and Asia.

Your donation will help Rotary International obtain the vaccines, transport and materials needed in the fight against polio.

I wish to thank Live Adventure Outdoor Event Specialists for their generous sponsorship of my entry for the 76km run, which has enabled me to run for this worthy cause.

End Polio Now

Since Rotary and its partners launched the Global Polio Eradication Initiative 30 years ago, the incidence of polio has plummeted by more than 99.9 percent, from about 350,000 cases a year to just 22 cases in 2017. To sustain this progress, and protect all children from polio, Rotary has committed to raising US$50 million per year in support of global polio eradication efforts. The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation will match Rotary’s commitment 2:1. Without full funding and political commitment, this paralyzing disease could return to previously polio-free countries, putting children everywhere at risk.  Rotary has contributed more than US$1.8 billion to ending polio since 1985.

About Rotary

Rotary brings together a global network of volunteer leaders dedicated to tackling the world’s most pressing humanitarian challenges. Rotary connects 1.2 million members of more than 35,000 Rotary clubs in over 200 countries and geographical areas. Their work improves lives at both the local and international levels, from helping families in need in their own communities to working toward a polio-free world.
