Carrie-Ann Kilimanjaro on Purpose

Carrie-Ann Kilimanjaro on Purpose

Personal message

A couple of months ago I was presented with an exciting opportunity to hike Kilimanjaro “on Purpose” with a group of likeminded individuals wanting to raise awareness for worthy causes close to their hearts.

The organiser, Cobus Visser has not only inspired me to follow my heart and set my fears aside but reminded me how much I want to rise to the occasion and make a meaningful difference with my life.

His perseverance to survive Hemophilia and pain every day and a lifetime of personal challenges have given him the skills and energy to help thousands of people change their lives for the better. Being able to support him on his journey and be there every step of the way to encourage and motivate him he has reminded me of my own personal vision of becoming a fierce warrior for the helpless.

What better way to do this than by looking at the amazing company that I work for, which embodies everything that I believe in and creating awareness for. As a conservation organisation and a responsible ecotourism operator Wilderness Safaris believes fully in its vision of sustainability –  contributing meaningfully to the wildlife and the people of Africa.

I will therefore be hiking to raise more awareness for our Children in the Wilderness Trust and Wilderness Trust. I need to raise 50% for the actual costs involved for the hike and the other 50% will be for these two organisations.

Children in the wilderness – is a life skills and educational programme for rural children living in remote communities adjacent the wilderness and wildlife areas within which Wilderness Safaris operates. Registered as a non-profit in Botswana in 2001 Children in the Wilderness has positively impacted the lives of more than 10 000 children in more than 7 African countries. With many alumni later joining the eco tourism industry in adult life.

The Wilderness wildlife trust – this trust allows us to reach beyond Wilderness The projects and researchers that it supports address the needs of existing wildlife populations, seek solutions to save endangered species and provide education and training for local people and their communities. The Trust focuses its work in three key areas, namely Research and Conservation; Community Empowerment and Education and Anti-poaching and Management. The goal of the Trust is to make a difference to Africa, her wildlife and her people.

I initially felt that my contribution would be small and insignificant, and I was scared that my efforts wouldn’t be enough to make a difference. Even though my Journey might feel somewhat insignificant in the greater scheme of things, I like to think back to the story of the little girl walking on the beach, throwing starfish back into the water – even though she couldn’t save them all, for each one that she did manage to save, it made a difference to that one.
