Personal message

The Kogelberg Biosphere, in the Overberg district of South Africa, is home to incredible wildlife. But we’re regularly confronted with injured animals, in pain and stress, that are in urgent need of help. These injured animals need a place to safely stay, to receive much-needed treatment and care, before they can be released back into the wild. And that’s where the Kogelberg Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre comes in.

The Kogelberg Biosphere, designated by UNESCO, is South Africa’s oldest biosphere. We’re a registered non-profit and public benefit organisation, operating in the Kogelberg area of the Overberg.

From leopards and buck caught in snares, otters and birds hit by cars, to tortoises and skinks burnt in wildfires – the need is great. As the Kogelberg Biosphere, we took urgent action in 2022, setting up our Kogelberg Wildlife Rescue Project. A group of Wildlife First Responders were trained to respond to incidents, and to work with local vets to treat animals in extreme pain and stress.

The next step is now to set up a Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre, where injured animals can recover, in a safe, clean, caring environment. Our goal is always to release animals back into their home territory, to live the life they’re meant to live. There is no other Wildlife Centre in the entire Overberg – so our support to animals will stretch across the entire district, Cape Town and beyond.

We’ve already secured the new home of the Centre! The Overstrand Municipality is leasing us a space where our Centre will be housed, just outside the town of Betty’s Bay. There’s an old abandoned building, and enough space for wildlife enclosures. But the building needs a complete overhaul.

THAT’S WHY WE NEED YOUR HELP.

PLEASE HELP US TRANSFORM THIS DILAPIDATED BUILDING into a safe halfway house for animals that are at their most vulnerable and scared. We need at least R1-million to upgrade this building. It’ll include a treatment section, a rest and recuperate area for animals, a space for our rehab team to meet and plan, and a space for volunteers to meet with visitors to the centre.

We’ve got just FOUR MONTHS (to end December) to raise funds for this.

DONORS CAN RECEIVE 18A CERTIFICATES ON REQUEST.

The Kogelberg Biosphere, in the Overberg district of South Africa, is home to incredible wildlife. But we’re regularly confronted with injured animals, in pain and stress, that urgently need help.

These injured animals need a place to stay safely and receive much-needed treatment and care before being released back into the wild. And that’s where the Kogelberg Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre comes in.

We’ve already secured the new home of the Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre! The Overstrand Municipality is leasing us a space where our Centre will be housed, just outside Betty’s Bay. There’s an old abandoned building and enough space for wildlife enclosures. But the building needs a complete overhaul – and we need to raise at least R1-million to transform this into a safe halfway house for the most vulnerable and scared animals.

Please help us establish the Overberg’s FIRST Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre – where the focus is on treating, caring for, and releasing our animals back into the wild.

The Kogelberg Biosphere, designated by UNESCO, is South Africa’s oldest biosphere. We include a 100 000-hectare area from Gordon’s Bay to Hermanus, stretching inland to include Botriver and Grabouw.

As a biosphere, we’re tasked with addressing threats to our living biosphere, such as plants and animals. We set up a registered non-profit and public benefit organisation in 1998.
