Personal message

Dear Reader

Until December 2021, my daughter Kylie Rossouw, from Terenure, Gauteng, was a vibrant, dedicated 15-year-old girl aspiring to become a doctor.  Kylie fell ill early December and during her submission at Busamed hospital, with the dedication from docters, life as we know it, was turned upside down. Kylie was diagnosed with an AVM; this means that an abnormal tangle of blood vessels in her brain was discovered. This is seen as a serious health risk and the rupturing of vessels can lead to severe complications.

After the diagnosis, meetings were scheduled with numerous doctors and specialists. We were well counselled regarding the risks and our brave girl opted to undergo the surgery on the 7th of March 2022. A complication occurred during surgery as Kylie had an intra-operative haemorrhage. After waking up from a medically induced coma of 2 days it was found that she had no sensation on the left side of her body thus, after almost 3 weeks in the hospital, she was admitted to a Rehab facility in Pretoria on 28 March 2022. After 5 weeks of hard work and dedication Kylie was discharged from the rehab on the 29th of April 2022. A big part of Kylie’s life was school, and it was with heavy hearts that we decided that she would not be continuing her Gr 10 school year. She worked hard to recover every day and she has made immense progress.

As of today, it has been more than a year since our lives has changed so significantly. Kylie has been undergoing therapy consistently, her left leg is close to complete function. Her arm is gaining more strength daily, thus aiding her with the movements. Her hand is still recovering slowly but we are grateful for every bit of progress. Kylie is also back in school and now in Gr 10, during this journey she has also decided to go study further in Neuropsychology after school.

Our biggest challenge is medical expenses as our medical aid does not want to pay for doctors or sessions from her therapists. We, therefore, appeal for any donations as there is no definite timeline as to how long therapy will be required for Kylie.

We are so grateful for all the assistance we have received from family and friends that was utilized for medication, splits, and co-payments. We would also like to take this opportunity to thank every person who has thus far contributed to Kylie’s Back a Buddy and for each person who shares her story to obtain more donations.

May you all be blessed.

Until December 2021, my daughter Kylie Rossouw, was a vibrant, dedicated 15 year old girl aspiring to become a doctor. Terenure, Gauteng

Kylie fell ill early December and was admitted to a hospital in Kempton Park. After 2 days, she was discharged but still feeling ill. We then took her to Busamed where she was admitted and multiple tests conducted. During her stay of 9 days and the dedication of the doctors at this facility, life as we know it, was turned upside down.

Expenses funded by the family have been utilized for medication, splints, Co-payments, snacks and food for Kylie.

Funds are being depleted as mom lost her job in 2021 and dad was demoted with a pay cut due to Covid.
