We will be opening the first-ever inclusive Cape Flats Fynbos Retail Nursery on Sunday 8 August and we need your help! This nursery will be a retail division of the existing Cape Flats Fynbos wholesale Nursery operated by FynbosLIFE Non-profit Company in Muizenberg and will be stocked with a wide range of local wild plants, cultivated strictly from Cape Town lowland seeds and cuttings. We are really excited that YOU, our local human community, will have access to these very special plants for planting in your home gardens and private spaces across Cape Town in an effort to nurture and support our more-than-human community of insects, birds and many others that share this beautiful place with us.

Are we hot or WHAT??? Capetonians, did you know we are living in one of the hottest biodiversity hotspots on Earth? The Cape Flats alone supports more than 1460 different plant species. Sadly though, right here in Cape Town, we have ten of South Africa’s 21 Critically Endangered national vegetation types – that’s almost half!

By restoring stepping stones for biodiversity within our gardens and private spaces, we provide one solution to Cape Town’s conservation challenge. Locally indigenous gardens provide food and shelter for small animals like birds, chameleons, frogs and insects, and enable their movement from garden to garden, encouraging colonisation, migration and interbreeding.

Not only are these urban biodiversity gardens ecological assets for wildlife and water conservation, but they are also aesthetically pleasing and offer us opportunities to observe, understand and conserve our faunal and floral heritage. Our retail nursery will be the first of its kind in Cape Town and will offer a unique supply of plants to the public from various Cape Town lowland veld types, including strandveld, sand fynbos, granite fynbos, renosterveld as well as wetland and forest understorey (shade) species.

We are fully comitted to opening on 8 August and would love to be equipped and ready to welcome visitors on our first day of trading. Our fundraising target amount of R 15 000 is calculated based on the following items that we need to set up our brand new retail division of the Cape Flats Fynbos Nursery:

  • Fence (30m x 1.5m)
  • Gate (3m x 1.5m)
  • Wendy house
  • Weed matting (400sqm)
  • Irrigation pipes (20m)
  • Educational signage
  • Printer for plant pot labels

We need your support and would be grateful for any financial contributions towards setting up this project. Alternatively, if you have any of the items listed above (new or used, but in good condition) and are willing to donate them to this project, please send an email with pictures to [email protected].

The Retail nursery will be situated at the FynbosLIFE HQ in Promenade Road, Muizenberg.

Grand Opening Date: Sunday 8 August 2021, 10am – 4pm.

Thereafter we will be trading on the first Sunday of every month (10am – 4pm) and will also be open by appointment.

Follow us on Instagram and Facebook for updates on this project. For more info please contact Erin on 083 288 5087 or email [email protected]

All sales at this retail nursery will be in aid of FynbosLIFE Non-profit Company (reg. no. 2019/067339/08), an organisation pioneering the cultivation of local wild plants that belong to indigenous veld types across the Cape Town lowlands. Our projects aim to create urban biodiversity stepping stones that improve linkage between the City’s nature reserves. Such wildlife pit stops can take the form of educational community outreach gardens, private gardens (yours!), landscaping projects, eco-pools, wetlands and other fynbos rehabilitation projects. More info about FynbosLIFE can be found on our website, www.fynboslife.com.
