Personal message

Born in Qwa-Qwa, Free-State, South Africa in 1988, Hlox Da Rebel fell in love with writing in 2008 and took his work to stage in 2010. In 2011 he founded Sicknatcha Poetry Movement, a live performance and literature company with the primary aim of offering a platform to emerging poets and musicians in both rural and urban areas.

Throughout his journey as a performing poet he shared the stage with some of the world’s well-known international spoken word artists such as, Natalia Molebatsi,  Black Ice (Amsterdam), Crystal Valentine (USA), Miles Hodges (USA), Dike (Nigeria) and collaborated with Kgafela Wa Magogodi and Kaloune (ReUnion Island) to name a few. He is currently working on his debut poetry anthology “Akimbo” to be published in the in 2019.Hlox has also made a mark in the comedy industry and has shared the stage with the likes of Rasta Eye N Eye, BSB (Lesotho) and was a showcase act at Tieho Khakhau”s “Qhomang” One Man Show.

“Akimbo”, in this context used to portray a woman’s strength and also used as personification, as every woman who has experienced abuse of any form in the hands of men. The title poem “ Akimbo” was written as a campaign against women and child abuse after the rape and murder of a Western Cape teenager Anene. The poem was also performed at the 21st  Poetry Africa, International Annual Poetry Festival in Durban, 2017 in a collaboration with Kaloune from ReUnion Island, thus it got international recognition and was translated into Ukrainian by Hanna Yanovska for the students of Ukraine University.

In 2017, the first manuscript of 60 poems ranging matters of from love, social ills and spirituality was submitted to a publishing company for the project to be launched in 2018 but due to lack of funds, the project couldn’t be completed but a lot of work had been done already (incl. cover design, editing, marketing), hence the decision to launch the book independently.

Your contribution will mean a South African dream coming true as Akimbo has already been invited to be launched at the University Of Minnesota, 2019 Graduate Colloquium Series, this September in Minneapolis, U.S.A.

Publishing of the book will also mean being able to donate sanitary towels to girls in rural schools, as 10 % off the sale of each books will be donated used to purchase a pack of sanitary towels from a local based sanitary towels man8ufacturing company. Akimbo is more than just a poem/book but a campaign against gender based violence and also a motivational book to the South - African youth, especially artists going through depression.

It's only through writing that I am able to breathe and your contribution will allow me to do just that, breathe and with enough air to go around I will be able to share the air I breathe with others.
