Yolande Du Plessis from Bloemfontein is raising funds to support her son Luke Bekker (9 months) who was a premature baby. Luke is deaf in his left ear and needs a Cochlear implant.
Born on 17 Sept 2018 at 34-weeks, Luke was in ICU for 5 weeks as he was very ill. His lungs were not yet mature enough so he could not breathe on his own. They took him straight to ICU where he was on machines to help him breathe. He was on and off on the machines and then got more sick with infections. He had a blood transfusion and he got life-threatening meningitis. The Doctor told us he had a 50% chance of survival but he pulled through the seizures, infections, meningitis, not breathing on his own, kidney infection, 5 lumbar punctures... Thank God after 5 weeks he came home. At 4-months, we discovered he is deaf and does not respond to sounds. We have since had his hearing tested and this has been confirmed.
Luke was diagnosed as deaf in his left ear at 4 months. He does have hearing in his right ear. We are busy with the processes of attaining hearing aids for him which he will receive on 10 July 2019. There is a possibility for him to be a candidate for a cochlear implant but as he only needs this for a single ear the state will not pay for the implant.
We have to raise money for this operation and implant (R250 000). We are doing everything we can as I had to leave work to look after him and his daddy is only getting enough so we can survive monthly. We need everyone's help to make Luke's future better. Having this implant will mean that learning, hearing, speaking, and living will be easier.
Breakdown of costs:
Cochlear implant R214 500
Cable R 1450
Battery rack/holder R4924
Speech therapy: not sure of amount yet
Donations will mean that Luke will be able to hear, speak with the help of speech therapy, go to school without having any problems in learning or development and live a normal life without struggling to hear with only one ear.
