Mandela Day Cycle Tour

Mandela Day Cycle Tour

Personal message

Food insecurity is a huge problem in Cape Town at the moment. Recent shocking stats by the National Income Dynamics Study have shown that over half of all households ran out of money for food during lockdown. In addition to this, 15% of respondents said that a child in their household went hungry in the week prior to the interview.

Although the scale of this issue is so vast in our city, there are many amazing organisations who have stepped forward to tackle it. I will be completing a Mandela Day Cycle Tour (2 x 67km) from my bike at home to raise awareness, as well as some funds to support a brilliant local feeding scheme called Ladles of Love.

I would hugely appreciate your support- whether by matching my kilometres with a donation, joining the Ladles of Love sandwich making record attempt on Saturday, or spreading the word!

In seven short years, Ladles of Love has gone from feeding 70 meals at our very first soup kitchen to providing over 300,000 meals every single week. We started with one small soup kitchen serving soup to the homeless once a week on St. Georges Mall, and we grew to serve thousands from our HQ kitchen at The Hope Exchange in Roeland Street.

Then the Corona Virus pandemic hit, escalating the number of starving people in need across the country - we expanded rapidly in order to meet this rising need for food.

During the lockdown period alone, we’ve distributed over 4 million sandwiches and have served over 14 million meals in total (numbers correct up to 4th May 2021).

When you fundraise for Ladles of Love (or sponsor one of our team), you are directly funding our work and helping to feed as many people in need as possible. Thank you.
