Medical Help Needed for Prosthetics

Personal message

My name is Dedrê Bekker and I am raising funds for my husband for a new prosthetic leg.

His name is Mark Anthony Bekker, was born on the 8 November 1981 with a very small leg and 2 of his toes missing on his other foot. Reason was his mother’s umbilical cord wrapped around his leg and toes, which resulted in the leg and toes not forming properly. His leg got amputated when he was about 2 years old and got his first prosthetic leg when he was 3 or so. (He is also struggling to walk properly due to this)

Mark's parents had him on medical aid from the age of 3 to 21 which he received all his prosthetic legs from. How I can understand he was a very active young boy at that stage, playing rugby, cricket soccer, etc. After school, he worked for Eskom in Witbank and still stayed with his parents.

On the eve of 2 march 2004 both his parents past away in a car crash.

Being young and not knowing how to cope with the loss of his parents, he lost his job and lived on the streets for 6 years in Durban KZN.

He then got stuck with the same leg from 2001 up to 2015.

In 2009 or so, he got a job at Ocean Basket.

He was a waiter and slowly worked himself up as a manager. In 2015 he had the opportunity to run a bar as General Manager in Westville. When he worked there he had the opportunity to go to Wentworth hospital for a new prosthetic leg in January 2015. He then received his leg in March 2015. That time I met him, a wonderful human being, and moved to Richards Bay as the company got sold and wasn’t taken over as concern. We then stayed with my mother (at that time I was his girlfriend) and got married in October 2015.

After not finding jobs in Richards Bay we moved to my father in Phalaborwa thinking we will get work here.

He is currently doing his own work from home, doing odd jobs in maintenance. Still looking for a permanent job to get himself on medical aid for prosthetics. I am working for minimum wage and we have a 2-year-old we need to support.

The government legs don’t last over a year and they don’t want to help him with a new prosthetic leg/socket every few months. Also, they can't build his socket due to his stump being completely different than the norm. So we have to see someone private.

He has been struggling to walk properly and his stump is always blue. The doctor advised as well for a new proper leg.

Please if anyone can give something towards his medical costs we will be FOREVER thankful.

If we could reach the target, we can be able to get a new Prosthetic leg for Mark and will never need to struggle again, he will be able to do more things normally. He will be able to get any job and he will not be in pain as he is now because of a leg that's not fitted for him.

We will be able to function as a family together

The costs will only cover the Prosthetic leg.
