MASKhero

Personal message

My name is Dr Barlodien Kotze from Cape Town and I started the MASKhero initiative with the aim to protect our healthcare workers.

Thank you to everyone that supported our first project (free cloth masks to patients entering GSH) in the quest to protect our healthcare workers!

We are proud to say that with the back a buddy funding and through mask sales we have supplied the Ortohopaedic outpatient department with 621 free masks to the value of R18 630!

Since it is now mandatory to wear a cloth mask and all patients entering hospitals are already wearing a mask we will aim to protect our healthcare workers in other ways.

As our country battles COVID-19 and the number of people arriving at our hospitals for testing is increasing, personal protective equipment (PPE) constraints continue to create a great challenge. To address this problem, a team comprising members from UCT’s Medical Devices Lab within the division of Biomedical Engineering in collaboration with the Division of Orthopaedic Surgery, came together to develop an innovative COVID-19 testing station.

The “UBUNTUBOOTH” testing station preserves PPE and keeps clinicians and healthcare workers on the front lines protected. “Ubuntu” encompasses the essential human virtues; compassion, reciprocity and humanity, vitally important elements which we need in this unprecedented time.

The UBUNTUBOOTH was designed and developed by biomedical innovators, Prof. Sudesh Sivarasu  and Mr Tertius de Villiers, in consultation with Orthopaedic Surgeon and Orthopaedic Research Head Prof Michael Held, Prof. Stephen Roche, Dr. Maritz Laubscher  and Orthopaedic and Infectious Disease and Immunology PhD candidate Miss Robyn Waters.

The UBUNTUBOOTH is made from readily available materials and will act as a highly protective barrier between the clinician and the patient during COVID-19 testing.

UBUNTUBOOTH is unique in its design to allow multiple access points to test patients which allows for a quicker turn-around time between patients in a safe manner. It is easy to transport and has been built to withstand extreme weather conditions, particularly beneficial as we move into our winter months.  This testing station can be used beyond COVID19 for other infectious diseases such as Tuberculosis.

The first UBUNTUBOOTH will be placed at Groote Schuur Hospital COVID-19 testing center, which is currently seeing a steep rise of patients who need testing.

Let’s help keep our healthcare workers safe!  The production cost per booth is R30 000 and in the next 2 weeks we hope to place 4 stations in necessary locations.

*Where possible, funds raised will be transferred directly to the supplier.*
