My name is Henry Cock and I am running from coast to coast to raise funds and awareness for mental health. That’s 2800km in total. From from Kosi Bay, South Africa to Vioolsdrift, Namibia.

I am going to break a Guiness World Record while doing it - I am going to run the most consecutive half marathons in a row - in 133 days!

Who am I? I am nobody special. I’m not an ex-athlete, or a professional sportsman of any kind. All I am trying to do is raise awareness of something that has affected me and people around me, and affects hundreds of millions of people globally.

Did you know that globally 1 in 5 people suffer from some sort of major mental health disorder?

So what are WE going to do about it?

My goal is to raise upwards of 4 million Rand for The South African Depression and Anxiety Group (SADAG) who are at the forefront of patient advocacy, education and destigmatisation of mental illness in our country. Their expertise lie in assisting patients and callers throughout South Africa with mental health queries.

If I can raise 10c from every South African citizen I will reach my target. Will it come from every citizen? No, it won’t. I’m asking 8000 people to donate 10c for every kilometer I run in 2021, including my training.

How much do I train? 300km a month. This works out to 1 coffee per month, per person. If I get just 10c from 8000 people for every km I do (my ain is 6000 km in total), we will raise R4.8 Million by the end of the year to help people who don’t believe help exists for them.

Anxiety, eating disorders, depression, bipolar, mental breakdown - these are all types of mental illnesses. Features may be persistent, relapsing and remitting, or occur as a single episode. Have you ever felt burn out at the end of a long year? Burnout is considered a mental health issue. I bet lots of you have felt it but most people will never even stop to think they might be mentally “unwell”. We go to the GP every time we are physically unwell - why don’t we do the same and check up on our mental wellbeing?

I only became aware of my own mental health issues in 2019. The more I started to delve into my own personal experiences, the more I began to understand how important mental health is and the more I learnt that it is still a very stigmatised and taboo subject.

Lack of education, cultural or religious stigmatism and patriarchal ideals have people ashamed to admit or seek help for their mental health issues or believing that there is something wrong with them, that they are weak, or that they are a problem that has no solution. None of this is true. It takes great courage to speak out and recognise that you suffer from a mental disorder. The more we can open the conversation surrounding mental health, the greater the understanding and empathy will be with those that suffer.

I used to struggle through it. I thought taking something for it showed weakness. My mind can’t be weak? It needs to be strong and power through. It took me months of therapy to work up the courage and put myself on medicine, and admit to the people I cared about the most that I suffered from anxiety.

I started seeing a therapist in 2019 - something I never thought I “needed” to do. She has helped me through some truly difficult times and continues to help me understand myself in a different way, to self-reflect and diagnose patterns in my behaviour and find ways to cope. Gaining this awareness and understanding has been incredibly empowering.

In South Africa the percentage of the uninsured population that has access to some form of mental healthcare is as little as 0.89 percent. This is a shocking statistic. Did you know that a South African commits suicide every hour. That’s a horrifying 23 people a day.

BUT the world IS waking up to the fact that mental health awareness plays an important role in how societies function and operate. Something that has shone a spotlight on this is COVID-19 - a pandemic that has affected ALL of us the world over. People have struggled with isloation, fatigue, illness and the death of loved ones... there has been a new wave of mental health concern and diagnosis.

If you’ve ever known someone, or helped someone with anxiety or depression, you will understand their crushing feelings of defeat, the lows, the feelings of unworthiness, helplessness, exclusion. Its time to change those feelings and help people out!

2021 is the year of togetherness, not individualism – I’d love for you to be a part of my journey in bringing this disease into the light.

Let’s all be more Mentally Aweh - for our friends, our families, for ourselves and all of those around us.
