Personal message

On the 16th April 2019 we set up our first ever kennel drive. The purpose of this drive was to provide 100 Kennels to dogs in townships across Cape Town. Too many dogs within these townships have no Shelter to protect them from the cold, rain and storms, many dogs die due to hypothermia during the harsh winter months.

One of the things we noticed during the kennel deliveries was that many of the dogs were chained up on sometimes less than a 1m chain. They eat, sleep urinate and defacate in the same area. When speaking to the Owners the reasons behind the chaining was often (they will run onto the streets and possibly get hit by cars or get lost, they will be stolen for breeding purposes or  dog fighting, they will bite passerbyes etc)

It is devastating seeing the dogs living in these conditions however it is not illegal to chain dogs in South Africa and therefore we do not have the rights to remove the dogs from the environment unless they are severely neglected, malnourished or abused.

This is why alongside providing Kennels for the dogs without shelter we are starting up an unchaining project. For owners who agree to the project we would put up a fence around their yard or provide a runner for the dog so they can move around freely within the yard but still remain secure and safe. We strongly believe this will improve the dogs quality of life as the dogs are hardly ever taken off their chain or for a walk. Imagine being confined to a one metre surrounding for your entire life...

In order to undertake this initiative we need the funds. For a runner or fencing project we would need items such as poles, cement, wire, hooks, durable strong collar, chain, anchors, fishing swivles, quick links, bamboo fencing or chicken wire, each house will vary depending on the structures they already have in place, size of area and number of dogs in that yard. We also try to get the locals involved to help us with the project to help give them a job, a portion of the funds will also go towards paying the locals a day wage to help us with the Project.

The before and after pictures of the dogs being unchained will be put up on our Facebook page and Website so you can keep track of where your donation has gone.
