Personal message

I am a South African living with my family on an island in Mozambique near Barra Beach in the Province of Inhambane.

The island was known as 'ilha dos Porcos' which means 'island of the pigs' because the Portuguese used it as a pig breeding colony during their occupation. These days the island is known as 'Survivor Island' because during the (1977 - 1992) civil war many local people hid there to survive the war. Survivor island also has a smaller island with young children who attend the little island school.

The people of the islands really live off very little, it's actually incredible how they manage to survive. In relation to the rest of Mozambique, which has a very low standard of living, the island really struggles to make a living. From a desire to help them we came up with the idea of a dhow race fundraiser, this is our second event. During our first event in April 2021, we successfully raised funding to buy food supplies for the islands.

Our 2022 dhow race fundraiser will be focused on establishing a self-sustainable initiative for Survivor Island's primary school.

Our initiative is to build a dhow for the only little school on the island. The dhow will transport the children safely between the two islands, earn revenue as a transport/goods dhow, carry potential donor/friends to the school from the mainland, earn revenue during the festive periods bring visitors to the island along with the rest of the island dhow community.

We are very excited about the initiative! We would love the little dhow to be christened before the race in April 2022, where it will compete in the race and do us proud!

The island has 28 dhows and the small island has 2 dhows.

The funds raised will be used for the construction of a dhow.

The dhow race will take place on the 25th April 2022 when the winds are moderate and the weather is warm and pleasant.

The island dhows are normally used for transport and fishing and their dhow race is a huge event on the island, it's going to be great fun for all.

The race will start on a small island outcrop in the ocean and round the two islands and finish on Survivor Island with a prize-giving and a feast.

There is also a unique and exciting opportunity for those of you who would like to join in the race as dhow crew. We also have motorised boats following the race and tickets can be purchased, proceeds will go to the fundraising cause.

There are a total of 30 dhows on the two islands. In moderate winds, the race will take approximately 3 hours to complete.
