Personal message

"My 11-week old son has had 2 heart attacks, 2 lumbar punctures, 16 blood tests, 8 drips….. I’m really trying to hold it together, but as we speak he’s lying in ICU and the doctors basically told me that they have done all they can..." - Christo Van Wyk

Michael Van Wyk was born on the 4th December 2018 with a severe heart defect known as a complete AVSD.

He has spent most of his life in the hospital undergoing test after test and doctors have been treating complications and infections as a result of his condition. While in the ward his parents and grandparents took turns looking after him day and night while still going on with everyday necessities.

Just when you think there is light at the end of the tunnel something else goes wrong.

It's a truly heartbreaking experience seeing your little bundle fighting to stay alive. He has already gone through so much testing and invasive medical procedures, but he never forgets to give his loving mother a big smile to stop her tears. Numerous blood tests, lumbar punctures, heart failure, blood transfusions, various infections, breathing difficulty, fluid on his lungs, feeding tubes, catheters, drips out of hell (from leg to arms to head), lung machine, are just some of the things he went through and is still going through.

Through all this, he still fights to stay alive

Now he's in ICU and we can't see the beautiful smile anymore. He's totally intubated and in a conduced coma. The lung machine is doing the breathing for him. It's heartbreaking to hear the doctors saying "We are doing all we can".

Update 27 February 2019:

All we know is that Michael will be taken to the Red Cross in Cape Town and that only sleeping arrangements will be available for his mother. To the hospital, Michael is a patient, and he is only provided for in the form of formula and nappies, everything else is at our expense.

I am the sole breadwinner in our family and we survive on my salary. For the past two weeks I have been working during the day and spending the nights at his bedside feeding and changing him every 3 hrs and trying to make him as comfortable as possible, his mother takes over the day shift while I go to work.

Going to Cape Town will be the end of my employment and the funds will basically to cover my board, lodging, petrol and whatever supplies are needed for my wife and Michael, no one can give us a straight answer as to how long we would need to be in cape town, the best they can tell as is between 1 to 8 months depending on how many kids are scheduled for surgery before him.

Michael's parents are posting updates here:

Any and all donations will be used for expenses like traveling, boarding for parents, food and anything Michael may need.

We welcome all prayers and donations.

Update sent to BackaBuddy from Michael's dad on 05/03/19:

"Michael is doing much better, he is still in the ICU and hooked up to a ventilator that breathes for him, but at least he isn't critical or in failure anymore. The doctors are hopeful to get him breathing on his own by the end of the week. We are absolutely blown away by the support we have received and it feels like we can breathe again. To go from complete hopelessness thinking you are on your own, to people contacting you with love and support makes a world of difference."
