Help Michelle get to Spain

Personal message

Good day everyone!

My name is Michelle Marais; if I need you to know only one thing about me it's that I am an absolute die-hard agriculture enthusiast with a passion for people, Africa and development.

I moved from Johannesburg to Bloemfontein (South Africa) in 2016 to begin my journey towards becoming an Agricultural Economist. Now, five years, many lessons and plenty of life-changing experiences later, I'm in need of your help.

I have always been an inquisitive student, a naturally outgoing person and someone who derives a deep satisfaction from teaching and learning. My holiday jobs have ranged from working on basic chicken farms in Zambia to state-of-the-art pig farms, to financial planning and product development. In this time I discovered my passion for training and working with developing farmers. I found that I want to serve as a link between the academic world and the industry, translating valuable analytical, technical and scientific information in such a way that it can practically make a difference in even the smallest of small-scale farmer's operations. Over the past three years I have worked as a Tutor, Research Assistant and a Junior Lecturer at the University of the Free State which continued to build my academic, organisational and teaching skills.

As I am approaching the end of my Master's on Identifying a niche market for woolgrowers in South Africa at the UFS- I found myself looking for the next opportunity. I wound up shooting for what felt like the moon, and landing in the privileged position where I have been selected as one of 25 students world-wide to study at the International School of Agribusiness Management (ISAM) in Almería, Spain from September 2021. This course entails me learning directly from global industry leaders in practical settings such as internships that will provide me with incomparable insight and an inimitable skill set that I believe will enable me to continue developing agriculture in South Africa once I return.

The cost of both my living expenses and my tuition fees totals R576 625. I am still in need of R400 000. (You can see a detailed budget here.)

It's a lot. I know. But, just like I didn't think I would get accepted at ISAM, I would not have known if I did not try. With your help, however small, this dream can become a reality. I am eternally grateful to all who have helped me this far, and will forever appreciate your contribution. No amount is too small and although it might take a village- with your help I can be one step closer.

I am looking forward to making an impact on the agricultural sector of Africa and continuing to develop the potential we all know exists.
