Midmar 8 Mile

Midmar 8 Mile

Personal message

Every year the largest Open Water swimming event takes place- Midmar Mile. A charity drive takes place during the event with a limited number of swimmers pledging to swim the 8 miles to raise funds for various charities including Mandeville Disability Swimmers.

Mandeville Disability Swimmers is a well goverened and extremely worthy cause, with its primary objective being developing swimming in Central Gauteng for dissabilities in communities at any level. MDS supports programs for: 1. Learn to swim- Every person who learns to swim represents a life potentially saved, 2. Swimming talent identification and development as well as 3. The preparation of elite swimmers for SA Nationals, World Championships and Paralympics. This project to create a centre of excellence for disabale swimmers began in 2009 and coninues to develop however this has not been without challenges many including financial problems as the average cost of supporting a single swimmer throughout a year amounts to almost R20 000.

Funds which have been raised previously for MDS have assisted in teaching more than one hundred and fifty previously disadvangted school children with a disability as well as contributing to the continous improvement of the more advanced young swimmers. The MDS elite squad memebrs all received international Paralympic Committee swimming rankings and some have been earmarked for the 2020 Tokoyo Paralympic Games.
