Help Get John To China

Personal message

My name is Mihlali John Malilwana (24) and I am from Queenstown, Eastern Cape. I am studying at the University of Cape Town.

I have been involved in youth development programs since 2015. Last year in honour of Mandela100 I embarked on a sanitary pads collection drive in Mthatha. We were able to collect over 2000 pads in one month and distributed them to girls during assembly on Mandela Day 18 July 2018.

In trying to bridge the gap between boys and girls in terms of needing sanitary products in November 2018, I also decided to have a sanitary products collection called Empowerment which was aimed at both girls and boys.

Because of my initiatives, I was urged to apply to the United Nations youth assemblies for the UN Women, and I was fortunate to be shortlisted for the IMUN in China this year.

I have been selected as a South African youth delegate to attend the International Model United Nations in Nanjing China for the UN Committee on Women Empowerment and Gender Equality.

I will be able to use the insight and experience gained from this event to continue making an impact in the lives of young South African girls, and become an influential force in changing the lives of many more South Africans.
