Michael Myekwa Sculptor

Personal message

Two Fish Hoek-based NPOs have joined hands to help sand sculpture artist, Michael Myekwa, start his own business.

Michael has become a popular attraction on Fish Hoek's beach. An experienced clay sculptor, Michael came to Fish Hoek with few resources, so chose sand to create his extraordinary creations. Michael and his sculptures are a familiar sight among locals and tourists on Fish Hoek beach and his only income is generated from donations of tourists photographing his sculptures.

Revamp the Valley is a NPO, dedicated to improving the Far South Valley region and creating a more unified and supportive community.
Angels Resource Centres is a business development organisation that offers training and mentoring to under-resourced communities.

Revamp The Valley has requested hi-res photographs of Michael's sand sculptures which will be printed into postcards and other items. The products will be sold at the Fish Hoek Tourism Info Desk, based at the Angels Resource Centre head office, 81 Fish Hoek Main Road.

This fundraiser will cover all printing and production costs, a stand for the items, and a sign at Michael's usual beach site.
Leigh Barrett, founder of Revamp The Valley, said, "Michael needs a more stable sign and safe place for his donations box at the beach. The box is often in danger of being stolen while he is working on his art."
A local manufacturer has been approached with an appropriate design, but we need to cover the cost of materials.

Proceeds from all sales will go back to Michael Myekwa to assist him in developing his business in the longer term. Angels Resource Centres have offered Michael ongoing mentoring to assist him.

Donors may contact Leigh Barrett directly at [email protected].
