Running for M.O.R.E

Personal message

My name is Peter Schwellnus. I am a passionate trail runner, Doctor, adventurer and South African Volunteer at Mulanje Mission Hospital, Malawi. I currently help serve a kind and under-serviced community in a country rightfully known as the warm heart of Africa.

The annual porter's race is a hallmark of Mulanje. It is a trail run with a route up and down the highest mountain in south-central Africa (Mount Mulanje). It has a distance of 24km with an elevation gain of 1800metres. I have decided to attempt the race in order to raise funds for M.O.R.E (Mulanje Officers Receiving further Education).

Clinical Officers and Nurses are the backbones of the health system in Malawi. They work under challenging conditions and deliver an excellent service to the people they serve. Clinical officers while not having received training as traditional doctors perform complex surgeries such as hysterectomies and ceasarian sections while nurses make enormous differences in the community they serve through preventative, curative and palliative services. They work with great skill and passion.
There is however a great need for further education for clinical officers and nurses to advance knowledge and skills. They have the option to train further in specific fields such as preventative healthcare, obstetrics and gynecology, surgery, internal medicine and Paediatrics. For their training the hospital is partly dependent on external support, next to the funds that the students contribute to their salary.

I am running to raise funds for the nurses and clinicians of Mulanje Mission Hospital. The money raised will be used by Mulanje Mission Hospital to further facilitate training in fields where there is currently a great need. Nurses and clinicians will be sent for postgraduate courses varying in length from one year to 4 years. By further education, skills and knowledge will improve and ultimately better care for the community that Mulanje Mission Hospital serves. The practitioners carry on working at the hospital bringing back the knowledge and resulting in sustainable development. The capacity building programme is overseen by the hospital management team, who prioritize training based on the most urgent needs.

The porter's race takes place on 13 July. Ideally, the funds will be made available to the Hospital for further training by 01 August 2019.

It costs on average R40 000 (2800 USD) per clinical officer or nurse to study further for one year. Some courses are only one year while the longer ones are 3-4 years. The money raised will go towards the enrollment of new workers into various fields of study and the upkeep of those currently in training. Courses usually start in September.

By donating you will directly help the practitioner realize his/her potential and indirectly help improve healthcare in an area desperately in need of it.
