Personal message

Step by Step's experienced occupational therapists aim to help resolve some of the challenges in learning that children from underprivileged schools face. We have successfully run the Muscle Mania™ programme to promote foundational fine motor and writing skills. Muscle Mania™ is a well-researched and proven programme from The Happy Handwriter®, which has been run at Westlake Primary since 2012.

Starting Grade 1 at Westlake Primary is often the first encounter that many of the children have with being at school. Consequently, many of the early preschool skills are underdeveloped and thus, the Grade 1 learners start school at a disadvantage to meet the requirements of the school curriculum. Furthermore, the context faces multiple challenges associated with poverty. Muscle Mania™ uses fun activities to activate the sensory and motor pathways to the brain to develop fine motor skills and promote fluid and accurate handwriting so that the learners can focus more on the content of their work. The benefits of this program includes:

  • Children are afforded the best opportunity to master the life skill of handwriting.
  • Improved skill and confidence to participate in fine motor activities in the classroom.
  • Adult to child ratio is 8:1, allowing for individual input.
  • Monitoring of children who are at risk for developing barriers to learning.
  • By working alongside the occupational therapists, who are specialists in
handwriting, the teachers are empowered to implement and carry over skills observed to the classroom.

Unfortunately this program cannot be run without the assistance of external funders.  The COVID-19 pandemic has had a devestating impact on this front and we need your help! The funds are needed in order to pay two occupational therapists and two occupational therapy assistants a portion of their fee. Majority of the funds are used to cover material costs which include Muscle Mania™ for each learner, writing and cutting material and sensory mediums such as play dough.

Your funds will go to ensuring that 120 Grade 1 learners at Westlake Primary School are afforded the oppourtunity to participate in this program, in 2021.
