Myburgh Cousins Conquer Cold Waters for Farm Children

Myburgh Cousins Conquer Cold Waters for Farm Children

Personal message

On 7 May 2011, Philip and Tyrrel Myburgh set off to swim 7.5km from Robben Island through freezing cold waters (no wetsuits!) and strong, unpredictable currents to Bloubergstrand and this deemed no easy feat!

But it was not to be.  For the first time since the inception of the event, the Cadiz Freedom Swim from Robben Island to Big Bay had to be cancelled due to extremely bad weather.  On Saturday morning the swimmers were taken by ferry to Robben Island and the 200+ support boats were in the water ready to go, however there was a very large swell, the wind was howling, the (already icy 13°C) water temperature began to drop and the support boats were battling in the unfavourable conditions (a few support boats even started to sink and had to be towed to the safety of Cape Town harbour!).  The swim was called off and postponed to the following day.  On Sunday, the conditions were still bad - the water was incredibly cold (11°C) with strong winds and a 4.5m swell.  An alternative 4 x 2.32km lap route around the rocks in Big Bay was arranged by the organisers to ensure swimmer safety but this time there were no support boats which meant the swimmers had no access to food and hot drinks, as is usually the case when doing the crossing.  Only 80 of the 149 individual swimmers turned up for this swim but the hostile conditions took its toll on most and only 44 swimmers successfully completed the swim!  All swimmers were required to make a turn through the medical tent and first aid attendants worked tirelessly to get the Myburgh cousins' body temperatures back up to 37°C (Tyrrel had gone down to 31°C and Philip to 33°C). After over an hour of pampering the boys emerged, swaddled in their warmest clothes yet rather disappointed.

Despite all of this, the swimming bug is not out of Tyrrel or Philip’s system and they are currently working towards a private crossing with a number of other swimmers who did not make it. Thank you to everyone who has donated towards this challenge and do not fear, your money has not been donated in vain – at least they tried, despite the conditions being far from ideal (unlike the other 69 swimmers who failed to even show up).  Many of the Robben Island swimmers say that the” ‘Round the rocks” swim which they ended up doing, was much more difficult than the actual crossing!  That’s reassuring.  We will keep you updated on when the crossing finally happens so watch this space!

In celebration of Freedom Day, the Myburgh cousins trained to undertake the tough Cadiz Freedom Swim to raise funds for the Anna Foundation.  Philip manages his family farm, De Meye Wines while his cousin Tyrrel is the winemaker at Joostenberg Wines and MAN Vintners and they have decided to support a worthy cause through their swimming efforts.  The Anna Foundation runs an after-school club for the children living on De Meye and Joostenberg farms, called the 3 R’s: Reading, Running, Right-ing. Through this programme they offer the children literacy/numeracy assistance, run sports programs, encourage right living and ultimately aim to equip these children with skills for lifelong learning.

Please feel free to continue to show Philip and Tyrrel your support by sponsoring their swimming efforts and in turn you will help the Anna Foundation to further their goal in breaking the cycle of apathy which often prevails within the farming communities.

Anna Foundation Logo

The Anna Foundation is all about inspiring young people and providing them with opportunities.  The organisation implements afterschool programmes on farms or rural low income schools in the Western Cape, currently in the municipal districts of Stellenbosch, Cape Town, Langeberg and the Overberg.  The Anna Foundation aims to empower disadvantaged rural children with life skills and core values, building self-worth and self-responsibility. The organisation’s “3Rs programme: Reading, Running, Right-ing” is implemented during after school hours and incorporates education (literacy), sports (running, riding and sports development) and life skills programmes (presented through drama).  Women and men from farming communities are trained by the Anna Foundation to run their 3R’s programme, and teenager and parent workshops are also provided.
