Help Restore Our Greenhouse

Personal message

I am Ncumisa Mkabile, a Khayelitsha-based agripreneur, born in Cofimvaba, Eastern Cape. Despite being a travel and tourism graduate, I decided to start farming in March 2020 when the COVID-19 lockdown regulations were introduced. I started off selling take-aways, but had to close the business due to the lockdown which limited my trade.

I started farming crops on land nearby. I had initially planned to start with crop farming by growing green peppers in the summer of 2020, I then realised that I could also use the winter season to my advantage by planting spinach and cabbage. Social media was my main  tool for marketing my newly founded agri-business to attract clientele. The strategy worked for the business as my story has attracted widespread attention which attracted more business opportunities and international recognition. In less than 6 months of the business being in operation we had harvested and sold over 1000 bunches of spinach with one goal in mind – “To feed the nation, one spinach at a time.”

My hard work in my business started getting recognition we started supplying one of the local Spar stores in Khayelitsha with our nutritious produce and job opportunities were created. Our inspiring story started getting attention from major media houses for interviews and got featured on Trace Africa. In November 2020 I was nominated and won the Starqt "Against Odds Entrepreneur" Award 2020.

Everything seemed to be going well for me and my business until the morning of the 16 February 2021 when we arrived at the Greenhouse, where all the farming takes place, to find it vandalised. The sight of the vandalised greenhouse broke my heart as I had invested so much in it with little to no funding. I had made the investment with no intention of investing further financially for another 5 years at least. This has caused a major dent in the business as not only will this impact me personally but also the jobs I have created through this initiative. The cost to fix the Greenhouse is estimated at 150k. Unfortunately my business and I cannot afford this setback and the costs it carries. I am a young entrepreneur who has worked extremely hard against all odds to make an honest living not only for myself but for others as well and the thought of someone invading my space and destroying something I am so passionate about devastates me, the thought of not being able to bare the costs of this makes it even more devastating.

We would like to ask that you please help us in raising the money needed for this project and to help us rise again for the benefit of every young disadvantaged child's dream, for the benefit of the jobs created through this initiative, but most importantly to help us restore a Greenhouse of Hope.

I thank you in advance as you make your pledges.

***Update*** I would like to thank all the donors who have helped me thus far in raising the funds to restore our Greenhouse of Hope, your generosity and belief in me do not go unnoticed. I have been getting a lot of requests from other potential donors to increase our target as they will like to help us reach the 150k estimated cost faster. We have decided to increase the target by a further 10k due to these requests.
