I, Nickey Seger, South Africa’s first female Navy Diver, qualified, 13 December 1996, 4 x Iron Man finisher and only 1 of 2 South African women selected to represent the country in the 35-39 age group long-distance World Triathlon Championship in Germany 2010 also being an experienced fitness specialist, wellbeing coach, and optimist.

I am also an entrepreneur and business owner of Curves for Women in Strubensvalley, where women are provided a safe and comfortable environment to do the work to achieve their fitness and well-being goals.

Throughout my life, I have been exposed to and pushed back against gender norms and stereotypes. From a young age, I made it my personal mission to, when hearing something was “not for women” that led me to make some interesting career choices in male-dominated industries, in doing so share my story to inspire other women to believe they can do anything they put their mind to.

In 2005 I met Goodwill while working together at Scuba City in Ferndale. Despite being disabled after a near-fatal taxi accident, I saw huge potential in him and decided to write in for a 94.7 Christmas wish every year for 3 years until he and his family was chosen.

As part of the wish, his daughter Nellie’s school fees were paid for 1 year at a private school in Cosmo City. After a year Goodwill had no option but to put Nellie back into a government school because he could not afford the Private school fees at the time. One day, while chatting to Nellie, I was horrified to hear that the kids in her class were fighting about who was allowed to sell drugs in the grade 3 class. It was then that I decided to step in and pay for Nellie’s school fees at a private school until she finished grade 12. Despite the ups and downs of owning my own business, I kept my promise, and Nellie, now in her final year of High School. Unfortunately, due to the Covid-19 pandemic and its devastating impact on my business, I am now unable to pay for Nellie’s final year of tuition.

For this reason, I am reaching out to all South Africans to help Nellie finish her schooling while demonstrating to the country that “the power of a promise matters” no matter your circumstances, one can always rise above it and make a plan and maintain one’s integrity. From 1-14 February 2022, I commit to running a half marathon for 14 consecutive days to raise funds for Nellie’s school fees and give a new spin of what love can look like during the month of love. Nellie`s tuition for this year is R75,600 or R6300.00 per month.

For me to pay for Nellie`s school fees the daily goal is to raise R5400.00 which is R258.00 per km. However, any donation small or large will be welcomed. Should I raise more than the campaign goal, the additional money will be put into a fund for any additional schooling expenses for 2022? So, this February, show me some love, as I live up to my value of integrity and help me reach my goal to help Nellie finish her final year of school.

Nellie is 18 years old and extremely excited to start grade 12. Her lifelong dream after grade 12 is to obtain her degree in nursing as she is passionate about helping people and us getting her to her completing her national senior certificate would be the next step in realizing her dream.

Nellie will need on-going support in order to cover her monthly tuition fees. Please consider pledging a monthly donation for the next 12 months so that we can walk alongside her on this journey of becoming a nurse. All funds raised will be paid directly to the relevant institution.
