My name is Nickolas. I am an incomplete tetrapligic / paraplegic level C6.
In 1997 I had a motorcycle accident and crushed my C6. I was totally paralyzed for about 3 months and against, all odds and doctors prognosis. One morning I was able to move my left big toe.
I made almost a 90% recovery even playing club cricket.
In the beginning of 2020 my health took a dramatic change when I started having neurological complications as a result of my injury in 1997.
By June 2020 I became a wheelchair user due to my legs not functioning correctly and my health continued to deteriorate over the last 3 years. Between 2020 and 2023 I spent about 8 months in hospital and rehab.
Unfortunately my prognosis is not good and they estimate that I will be totally paralyzed again within the next 10 years.
I started playing wheelchair rugby for TUKS Pretoria in April '23 this year and with the will of God I have been able to compete at club level and I do believe I have great potential. With the right Equipment (Rugby Wheelchair) I believe I can do very well at club level and possibly at a national level representing our Gauteng team.
I am quite a big and muscular guy (+-115 kg) and don't have my own rugby chair according my measurements. A Rugby Wheelchair is a specialized sport chair so it needs to be built to your specific disabilities and sizes. When manufacturing the chair they also take your deterioration into consideration to enesure you can adjust the chair as your health and disability deteriorates.
I currently use one of the sponsored clubs rugby chairs. Because the Rugby Wheelchair i am currently using is not manufactured to my size or disability. I consistently suffer from fractured or bruised ribs, scuffs on my back ribs, shoulder deterioration and vascular issues etc.
I did get a quote for a Rugby Wheelchair according to my specs and it's over 200k which I cannot afford. My aim is to raise the 250k and after I have purchased my Rugby Wheelchair and if there are further funds raised to still pay it forward by purchasing 10 additional normal wheelchairs to donate to the less fortunate and disadvantaged people that really need them.
I am currently medically boarded and only receive a monthly income protection payment.
Wheelchair Rugby is pretty much all I have left going for me and has brought me out of a very dark place I found myself in, where I gave up and even attempted suicide twice. Thanks to God, my wonderful wife, 2 boys and an amazing medical team I pulled through and I am slowly taking on new ventures on the road to recovery and reintegration to normal society and social activities.
Participating in sport and been part of a team again has really changed the direction of my life and given me hope which I would like to grow on.
I would really appreciate if you can contribute towards my dream and wellbeing as well as the other disabled people I would like pay it forward with and help.
I spent most of my life and instilled the principle of paying it forward as part of my and my family's values.
I am asking that you pay it forward and support my campaign to raise the money needed for my Rugby Wheelchair and safety equipment.
If there are individuals or businesses that wish to purchase my chair, sponsor my chair or donate the full amount for my Rugby Wheelchair.
Please contact me directly so i can provide the necessary documentation.
You are also welcome to brand the chair anyway you would like to.
Thank you all for your support.
