Nkosi Johnson - One in a million

There can be no greater revelation of a society’s soul than the way in which it treats its children

           .... Nelson Mandela

Introduction

Nkosi’s Haven was formed in 1999 by Gail Johnson, the foster mother of Nkosi Johnson, with the opening of our first haven in a house in Berea, Johannesburg.  Our mission is to provide a safe and nurturing home environment for mothers, their children and orphans left destitute by HIV/AIDS.   Since then, the organisation has grown with the addition of an adjacent house in Berea and the Nkosi’s Haven village set on a 2.5 acre plot in Alan Manor, near Southgate.  In 2002, we acquired a farm near Sebokeng and Orange farm and this is being developed into a Kibbutz style community farm, which will provide shelter and work for its inhabitants, vegetables and poultry for all the Havens and a sustainable revenue stream from the sale of surplus produce.

At present there are 188 residents spread across the 2 houses in Berea and the village in Alan Manor, comprising 42 mothers and 146 children, of which approximately half are orphaned.

HIV/AIDS  has had a devastating impact on South Africa, and whilst the pandemic shows signs of peaking and awareness has improved, the huge challenge society now faces is supporting people who are suffering from, or have been orphaned by the virus, to integrate back into society and to lead normal productive lives free of stigma and discrimination.

Our objective is to teach people how to live with HIV/AIDS and not to die from it.

Nkosi Johnson

Xolani Nkosi was born HIV positive to Daphne Nonhlanhla in 1989, was later fostered by Gail Johnson and became known as Nkosi Johnson.  In his short but brave life of 12 years he became one of the key symbols of AIDS activism in South Africa.

In 1997 he was denied access to the local school that Gail  tried to enrol him at.  This event sparked enormous debate which later led to a policy being passed to prevent discrimination against people living with HIV/AIDS. In July 2000 he gave a speech to the International Conference on AIDS in Durban, which became the tipping point of awareness and action in the fight against HIV/AIDS.  Whilst Thabo Mbeki got up and left the conference before the end of his speech, many thousands of attendees and millions of people around the world listened to his speech in tearful silence as he spoke about his experiences living with HIV/AIDS.  If you wish to read the speech that he gave at the conference click on the following link                 http://www.beholders.org/spirit/inspirationalpeople/110-nkosijohnson.html

Barely a year later he died on International Children’s Day (1st June 2001), however at the time of his death, Nkosi was the longest surviving child born with HIV.  Nkosi’s dream was that mothers and children who have suffered from HIV/AIDS be cared for together so that children would not be separated from their mothers as he was.  Today this dream forms the basis of the Nkosi’s Havens mission.

HIV/AIDS in South Africa

South Africa has been in the “eye of the storm” of the HIV/AIDS pandemic that has swept across the world and particularly our continent over the last three decades.  The impact of the early years of ignorance, denial and fear has been devastating, resulting in Southern Africa having the highest prevalence rates in the world.  It is estimated that approximately 6 million people are living with HIV/AIDS is South Africa and millions have already succumbed to the disease. There is an increasing realisation and understanding that HIV/AIDS is not a terminal illness but rather a chronic manageable  illness (like Diabetes), which with the right treatment, diet and lifestyle can allow the infected  to live a long and productive life.  Recent studies in the USA and UK conclude that a person, who now acquires the virus between 25yrs and 35yrs old, has a life expectancy of approximately 65 yrs.

Unfortunately in South Africa, we still have a long way to go before we can boast such statistics. Currently between 8 – 900 people still die from AIDS related illnesses every day in our country and many more are still being infected by HIV.  Awareness is improving and treatments are being rolled out, however there still remains a great deal of ignorance, stigma and fear of being shunned by communities, which means that the pandemic is still rising in certain age groups.

The great tragedy that is currently unfolding however, is the impact that this disease is having on the children of our country.  It is estimated that in South Africa over 350,000 children have inherited HIV from their parents and over 1 600 000 children have been orphaned by the disease.  An entire generation of our youth has been caught up in this terrible disease, most who whom were just born in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Fortunately, whilst our country’s leadership was in denial and disarray with regard to this unfolding pandemic, a number of NGO’s and charity organisations have risen to the call for help by those affected.  One of these organisations had its roots in a little boy called Nkosi Johnson - truly one in a million.

Nkosi's Haven

Nkosi's Haven Logo

Founded by Gail Johnson in April 1999 and named in honour of her 12 year old foster son and in memory of his biological mother who was unable to look after him, Nkosi's Haven was officially opened on 14th April 1999.

Infected with HIV from birth, Nkosi passed away on 1 June 2001 from an AIDS related disease. His legacy lives on.

Nkosi Johnson was South Africa's longest surviving child born HIV positive. He died at 5.40am on Friday, 1 June. His life was characterised by his brave fight for the rights of the HIV positive.

This Foundation seeks to raise funds for, amongst others, the following primary objectives:

  • Establishing, maintaining and sustaining communal environments for PWAs;
  • Supporting beneficiary organisations such as the Nkosi's Havens;
  • Establishing educational and training trusts for PWAs; and
  • Raising awareness of and destigmatising HIV/Aids in South Africa, and indeed the rest of the world.
