My name is Nomava Mercy Tunzelana (72). I live in Grahamstown, Eastern Cape, South Africa.
I am a Master of Arts degree student at Rhodes University (South Africa). I am at the stage of collecting data at my research site and I need funding for it. My research topic is "An Ethnographic Investigation of basic word order" in South African Sign Language Teaching at FET level in a South African School for the Deaf"
With my study, I wish to build knowledge on the recently introduced Bilingual-Bi- cultural Approach (Bi-Bi) to teaching the Deaf as well as the introduction of SASL as a subject for the first time in the History of Deaf education in South Africa.
There is a gap in the academic knowledge regarding the implementation of the Bilingual-Bi-cultural approach and I intend to address it by investigating the basic word order used in teaching SASL focusing on declarative, imperatives and interrogatives. This study will expose the structural differences between SASL and English which is their language of literacy.
As a student these are my academic achievements:
Bachelor of Arts with distinctions in Pedagogics 2, Xhosa 2 at the University of Fort Hare in Alice (SA) in 1984
Bachelor of Arts Honours with distinction in Linguistics Phonetics at Fort Hare University in 1985
Master of Arts in African Languages with a dissertation entitled "The Clausal Infinitive." in 1993.
Presently doing a second Master of Arts degree at Rhodes University (South Africa).
