Personal message

Children need healthy eyes and vision not only to develop but to thrive. Yet, because of financial challenges and a lack of eye health services, millions of children are unnecessarily suffering from vision impairment.

As a society, we are obligated to do more. Through our One School at a Time vision screening program, we have delivered life-changing eye health services and free spectacles to thousands of children in underserved communities.

However, the incredibly challenging economic climate is making it difficult to secure funding from donors and continue this impactful work. This is despite the fact that our list of schools continues to grow, with principals desperate for us to attend to the vision needs of their children.

For this reason, we’re looking to secure donations to extend our One School at a Time vision program to Cape Town-based schools.

With these funds, we will be able to:

  • Identify visual problems in children early and find solutions;
  •  Provide free comprehensive vision screening and eye examinations to 2,000 children;
  •  Donate spectacles to children needing them;
  • Test the vision of teachers and auxiliary school staff with no medical aid;
  • Provide spectacles to staff who need them, and
  • Refer people to their closest eye clinic for further care.

The impact on beneficiaries includes:

  • A marked improvement in school performance and attendance;
  • Enhanced well-being through improved confidence and self-esteem;
  • Enhanced safety in public spaces; and
  • Greater awareness of eye health issues

One of the many challenges of South Africa’s impoverished families is access to quality healthcare. Thousands of children are struggling unnecessarily because of vision impairment – a problem that can generally be quickly rectified with a pair of spectacles.

The reality is that parents and caregivers often have to prioritize putting food on the table above paying for phenomena.

One of the most common vision impairments is myopia - short-sightedness - which usually starts in childhood and progressively worsens until adolescence. The longer a child goes without correction, the more significant the impact on school performance and social development.

Despite being easily corrected with spectacles, it has become one of the biggest global public health challenges, with an estimated 339.4 million children suffering worldwide. AEI aims to intervene before it’s too late.

These funds will bring our One School at a Time vision screening program to schools in Cape Town, where under-served children will examine their eyes by eye health professionals.

Funding for this program will allow us to provide essential eye health services, donate free spectacles to children requiring them, and refer those needing further care and management to their nearest public health facility.

'Giving Sight, Bringing Hope'

The African Eye Institute (AEI) is a non-profit organisation dedicated to reducing avoidable blindness and vision impairment caused by refractive errors and other eye deficiencies. With generous donations and partnerships, AEI provides free, quality eye health services to underprivileged communities, particularly school-going children. Through our One School at a Time vision program, we offer interventions such as eye tests, examinations, and the provision of spectacles, making a life-changing difference to children's well-being. With the support of our sponsors, we are giving the gift of sight and will continue to do so.

Access to quality healthcare is a significant challenge for impoverished families in South Africa. Many children are struggling academically and socially due to vision impairment, which can often be easily corrected with spectacles. AEI aims to intervene early to prevent further complications. Your contributions will support our One School at a Time vision program, which will be implemented at two schools in Cape Town. Through this program, underprivileged children will receive professional eye examinations and free spectacles, improving their eye health and overall quality of life.
