Help Ottery through #LockdownSA

Meet Lauren, an Ottery resident and domestic worker. [Watch video]

Ottery is home to over 6,000 South Africans. Neighbour to Cape Town’s leafy southern suburbs. Isolation here is near-impossible, what with 4 - 12 people sharing a flat. The impact of lockdown on the people who live here is crippling. They have a roof over their heads, but no money to buy food and amenities. This is a community struggling for survival. Find out more about our campaign.

INTRODUCING LOLLA'S KITCHEN!

Known as Lolla by her friends, Lauren is broadening her efforts to do more for her community. Aware that lockdown hunger is driving people to desperation, she’s recruited her family and friends to provide warm meals to hungry families.

We are urgently needing funds to buy food to make meals for those who cannot afford to feed themselves.

Want to help? Sponsor a family a pot of food!

We are staring hunger in the face

SA’s food crisis has reached emergency proportions. Minister of Social Development, Bridget Masango highlights that “most South Africans, particularly those living in poor communities, have not had an income for the past 20 days due to the lockdown. This means that millions of South Africans are now staring utter desolation and hunger in the face as they are unable to go out and find work to put food on the table.”

We advocate a “hands up” approach and are still calling for food parcel sponsorship. Our soup kitchen is an interim solution during this time of crisis. This will allow us to act swiftly and to stretch resources to feed more people.

Help to feed a family

Right now, we’re using money out of our own pockets to buy raw ingredients for meals. The team is giving their time and expertise for free. We need your support! Just R250 will provide ingredients to feed a family of four for a week!

Act now! Donate to OtteryCAN

Support Lauren to get her community through lockdown. Help a family. #OtteryCAN!

About OtteryCAN! during #LockdownSA

Ottery Community Action Network (CAN) Cause Logo

My name is Lauren. Ottery is my home. Struck by the real impact of lockdown on the underprivileged people in our community, my employer and I started the Ottery Community Action Network (CAN).

The impact of lockdown on the people who live here has been crippling. They have a roof over their heads, but no money to buy food and amenities. Isolation here is near-impossible, what with 4 – 12 people sharing a flat. My heart goes out to the kids here that get a meal from the soup kitchen but when they go home there’s nothing to eat. Ours is a community struggling for survival.

OtteryCAN! acts as the go-between the public and Ottery families, campaigning for food parcels, vouchers and prepaid electricity. We also coordinate 10 soup kitchens operating in the area.

Please support me to get my community through this crisis. Help a family. #OtteryCAN!
