Pachedu

Personal message

This fundraiser is for a collective of 45 lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and intersex (LGBTI) refugees and asylum seekers in South Africa. They refer to themselves as Pachedu.

Members of the collective are from Zimbabwe, Malawi, and Tanzania; many are lesbians or transgender; one of the members has cancer; some of the members are HIV-positive; and most of the members are undocumented.

In Pachedu members' countries of origin, being LBTI it is illegal and culturally looked down upon. Some members of Pachedu have been shun by their families. Some members have been beaten or raped by their community or government. Pachedu members have all had cries for protection ignored or even mocked by law enforcement in their countries.

The group came to South Africa independently to escape this sexual and gender identity-related persecution. Together in South Africa, whenever they can, they share resources such as money, food, and shelter. They usually meet to celebrate having one another in our lives and catch up at least once a month.

As is the case for many people across South Africa, COVID-19 and the related national lockdown seriously threatens the Pachedu community. They lost our sources of income – which is not only a problem for any one individual member and their family. It is a problem for the entire group, as they are mutually dependent upon one another for resources. All members of Pachedu are at risk of losing their housing. They are at risk of going hungry. If any one of member, God forbid, got the virus, those who are immunocompromised (e.g. by HIV or cancer) would be at risk of serious health concerns and, as most members do not have documentation, they are at risk of being refused critical medical services. It is important that Pachedu members stay healthy. Given the fact that many are undocumented and that they do not have viable sources of basic necessities – it is particularly hard for Pachedu to stay healthy right now.

This fundraiser will help keep members of the LGBTI refugee and asylum community alive and safe during the COVID-19 crisis.

The group put together a list of how much money they need to cover rent and food for all members for the next few weeks. This fundraiser will go directly to supporting their basic necessities, including food, shelter, and medication.
