Get Palesa to Tokyo 2020

Personal message

Palesa Manaleng has shared a call with South Africans to help her fund her dream to compete at the Paralympic Games in Tokyo 2020.

Palesa is a hand cyclist, ENCA news journalist and second-year Public Relations student at the University of Johannesburg (UJ),

Since her accident, Palesa has represented South Africa in two para-cycling World Cups; she was named a national champion in athletics and twice named national champion in cycling.

Palesa sustained her injuries in a 2014 cycling accident.  After her bicycle brakes failed going downhill, she crashed into a palisade fence and dislocated her spine, broke two ribs, punctured a lung, fractured a shoulder and also sustained head injuries.

While Palesa was at a rehabilitation centre for her injuries, she would watch videos of wheelchair users who took part in sport and realised it was still possible for her to compete.

Once she was discharged from the hospital, she emailed possible sports clubs looking for a team to join. She would wake up every morning at 6am and train up and down her street in her everyday wheelchair.

Looking ahead, Palesa plans to represent South Africa at all major competitions, world cups or world championships. You name it, she plans to be there and to break records.

She would like to focus on developing para-sports in townships and rural areas, especially among young girls. Using sports to educate parents about being differently abled and removing the stigma that comes with being different.

Palesa believes that sports can be used to give differently abled children independence and a voice. Please help support Palesa to achieve her dreams!

Reaching Palesa's target will allow her to purchase much needed equipment for training and pay for travel costs to her various qualifier races nationally and abroad.

Her voice will be used to empower South African differently abled children that they do have a voice and it is possible to achieve their dreams.

Funds will be used as follows:

  • Equipment - R150000
  • Qualifier Italy - R50000
  • Qualifier Belgium - R50000
  • Qualifier Canada - R50000
