Yesterday, 6 December 2021, the Covid-19 pandemic tragically claimed another victim at one of our favourite local coffee shops, Peppertree Café on Kloof, in Cape Town.

Our deepest condolences and respect to the family and friends who loved the man.

Besides the tragedy for his family, left behind are the heartbroken people of Peppertree Café on Kloof:

  • Leah
  • Tendai
  • Plaxedes
  • Thandiwe
  • Zandile
  • Bongiswa
  • Vuyiseka
  • Malven

The eight front-of-house and kitchen staff members painfully and instantly lost a friend, a mentor manager, their jobs, their place of work and their livelihood.

Some of these staff members have been working at Peppertree Café/Melissa’s Food Store for years, a restaurant space that has itself become an institution in our community.

Covid-19 has hit our communities hard economically, and the eight staff members have been struck with a double backhand that will take time from which to recover.

The financial situation was so dire that they did not receive salaries for November 2021, and their chances of obtaining income in the next 2 months is slim.

Through this community fundraising project, we are inviting all frequent supporters of the local coffee shop culture, especially those who visited Peppertree Café, to contribute towards a stipend for the staff to see them through the next difficult couple of weeks.

All the money raised through this community effort will be divided equally between these eight, giving them hope and showing them that we, the village and neighbours, all do care.

Please contribute as much as you feel moved to. Any gift will be deeply appreciated, be it the price of a cup of coffee or a full café breakfast.

We hope to alleviate a small part of the burden for those left behind.
