Philip's journey with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia

Philip's journey with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia

Personal message

_____Update 21 September 2021____

On 30 November 2020 Philip was rushed to the ER, because of a terrible backache. X-Rays were taken and he got discharged after a few hours with pain medication, a referral letter to a Neurosurgeon and a diagnosis which states he has Bone Marrow Compression. The earliest appointment at the Neurosurgeon could be scheduled on the 17th of Dec 2020. Philip never got to that appointment.

On 13 Dec 2020 Philip went back to the ER, he had a loss of sensation in his legs and fingertips and was very pale. We knew something serious was going on. He immediately received 2 pints of blood. Blood tests were done and the doctors advised that a Bone Marrow Biopsy be done.  While waiting for the results, Philip got transferred to Netcare Pretoria East Hospital's Haemotology unit.  The BM results came back on 17 Dec 2020 - ALL (Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia). Philip received Chemotherapy as an inpatient and was hospitalized for almost a month. The Doctor recommended that he undergo a Stemcell Transplant - his sister were a 100% match and he received the stemcells on 13 May 2021.  Everything went very well with Philip and he was soon discharged but went to live with his parents for a few weeks as he was immunosuppressed and I had a greater chance of infecting him with Childhood illnesses (teacher) or Covid-19. Philip had his weekly check-ups for the first 100 days post-transplant. Everything went so well and even the doctors were amazed by how quickly his count's normalised. On the 5th of Aug 2021, Philip had his first Braai and Beer since Dec 2020. Life turned back to normal.

Philip had a check-up appointment on Wednesday, 8 September 2021. His blood results showed a spike in certain categories and the doctor immediately admitted him back to the Haemotology ward. His blood was sent to the Lab for further tests. On Friday, 10th of September, the Lab results stated ALL cells.

Our world has been shattered!

Hearing the news was much worse this time around. We had so much hope, everything went so well, everything started to normalise again, but the carpet was jerked out underneath our feet. Philip has been on sick leave since Nov 2020.  At this time his work made a loan agreement to help us, by paying part of his monthly salary, and Philip should repay it when he returns back to the office for employment.  Philip received no income at the end of July, as the first Doctors letter stated Philip should return to work by end of July. This letter was then extended until the end of Nov 2021.

We are very thankful that our close family and Philip's parents took the financial burden on their shoulders by making a financial contribution for us to pay the rent, etc.

Philip started working remotely from home at the beginning of August. but has not yet received his income.
Yet again with Philip being hospitalized and the whole process will repeat itself:
* 1 month hospitalized
* discharged
* scheduled stemcell transplant
* 1 month hospitalized
* isolation, etc

We are uncertain what the future holds.

We, therefore, ask you, to please help us by making a donation of any amount you wish, to relieve the financial burden from Philip's shoulders during this time, in order for him to focus on getting better and preventing a relapse.

Love and Blessings.

On 30 November 2020 Philip had terrible backache, he was lying down on the floor screaming of intense pain. I took him to ER24, he was placed on a drip, and x-rays of his chest and back were done and got referred to a specialist. He received a prescription for painkillers and muscle relaxants. The earliest appointment available was 17 December 2020. He was placed on sick leave and returned to work on 7 December.

On 12 December we had a casual braai to celebrate his 28th birthday which will be on the 14th of December. Philip was not in the mood, as he was still in some discomfort from his back and feeling a bit off. That evening everyone commented and noticed that he was very pale. On our way home he started vomiting, the next morning he decided to go to Medicare as we were very concerned.

After another chest x-ray and blood tests, an ECG was done, he got transferred to Peglerae hospital, as our co-payment for admission would be too high at Medicare.

Once admitted to the hospital, more blood tests were done. They found his blood counts were not as it should be.

On 14 Dec, (his birthday), Philip received 2 pints of blood. The doctor prepared him for a bone marrow extract to test his bone marrow.  The doctor said that for some reason it seems as if the bone marrow is not producing enough red blood cells, hence Philip being pale and got no feeling in his legs – no oxygen. Within the next hour, he was transferred to Pretoria East hospital.

On Thursday, 17 December 2020, the Bone marrow results confirmed – ACUTE LYMPHOBLASTIC LEUKEMIA – in other words, blood and bone marrow cancer! Our whole world shattered! We were shocked. Our knowledge of cancer = death! We were both scared and uncertain, as in three days our lives as we know it, our hopes and dreams, changed completely. Doctor said that without chemotherapy, Philip would have 2 – 3 weeks to live!!! The mere thought of our 8-month-old baby girl growing up without her dad, left us completely devastated. Chemotherapy was not an option to consider, it became a necessity for survival, the only chance of having the privilege to be able to see our daughter grow up and be part of her life.

That afternoon Philip was scheduled to receive a “Port-a-cath” in theatre. This is a port through which he will receive the chemotherapy. Due to Covid-19 regulations, there were only visiting hours between 18:00 and 19:00 for one person (me-his wife.) I stood outside the hospital, in front of his window the whole day, making sure he is okay and wanted him to know that he is not alone. The procedure was successful.

Philip started his first chemo session on Monday, 21 December 2020.

The doctor said that Philip is in need of a Stem cell transplant, which can only be possible once he is in remission. The cost of a stem cell transplant is very expensive, and this is the only option for Philip to survive Leukemia.

The social worker explained that Philip will not be able to go back to work for the next 6 months to a year, as his work for 2021 is to fight Cancer. We are therefore concerned about our finances as well, as Philip needs to pay our rent and pay our medical aid.

We are humbly reaching out to every caring heart out there, please help Philip with a second chance at life!

Blessings in abundance,

Regards
