PROVIDING A TRANQUIL ENVIRONMENT IN THE GROUNDS OF STEPPING STONE HOSPICE AND CARE SERVICES

Personal message

Stepping Stone Hospice and Care services has been privileged to have the support of Hibiscus Gardens who maintains our Garden of Remembrance with loving care and kindness every two weeks and our incredible volunteer Ben Botha whose portfolio is our garden maintenance. The garden is immaculate, and we would like to improve it further and ensure that patients, family members and staff utilize the space to the fullest as a garden environment has proven to have incredible clinical outcomes.

The benefits of a garden environment are incredible and has benefits for every person that enters our premises:

  • Patients who are exposed to gardens, even for five minutes, have shown a reduction in stress, appear calmer, and have elevated positive feelings. In clinical settings, research found that having a garden has reduced blood pressure, heart activity improves, and muscle tension is eased. It has also been proven that patients that are exposed to trees and water suffer less severe pain and suffering.

  • Family members of Hospice patients are encouraged to use the gardens at any time, whether it be an escape or time for reflection and quiet. Gardens can reduce the symptoms of stress and sadness in a calm and peaceful environment. Family members are also able to utilize the garden to speak to visitors and are also able to request that counselling sessions with our social workers are held in the garden.

  • Working in a Hospice environment can be extremely stressful. The job often involves overload and constant work demands. Our staff are continually faced with sadness, death and dying and a garden provides a positive escape from workplace pressures and allows staff to recuperate from stressful conditions.

To improve our garden further, we are hoping that you can assist us to purchase items including awnings, yellow garden umbrellas, solar garden lighting, garden furniture, and a hosepipe on a reel. The cost of these items is approximately R40 000.00 all inclusive.

Improving our garden will have major benefits of all who visit our In-Patient Unit as findings from several studies worldwide indicates that by simply viewing a garden scene significantly reduces stress within only five minutes. Research has also found that viewing nature from longer periods helps to calm patients and reduces pain. It also assists in easing feelings of sadness and relieves stress for family members and staff.
