Help Quote This Woman+ Close the Gender Gap in South Africa

Personal message

Quote This Woman+ wants to change the news narrative.

Quote This Woman+ has built a database of over 350 woman+ thought-leaders and experts to change whose voices get heard in the news.

We need your help to keep growing by raising R55 000 by 27 November 2020.

UPDATE 1: Hooray for halfway in under a week!

UPDATE 2: The power of women's stories

UPDATE 3: Stories & support build a Woman+, womxn-centric future

UPDATE 4: We're giving away an original artwork!

Here’s QW+ founder, Kathy Magrobi:

I did not set out to launch a gender/media start-up just before turning 50, but once the idea for Quote This Woman+ (QW+) took hold late 2018, it wouldn’t leave. I’d come across overseas organisations with databases of woman-only experts as a solution to the endlessly gendered portrayal of women in the news. South Africa needed the same thing!

Various studies show that women make up less than 20% of the people featured in the media as news experts - meaning that consciously or not, over 80% of the time, journalists amplify the voices, opinions and perspectives of men. And: QW+ is aware that news stories consistently marginalise other voices outside the mainstream in terms of sexual orientation, gender identity, poverty, rural location, lack of access to education, etc.

With the 2019 national and provincial elections drawing near, I was sure that if I could make a searchable database of women (and others, hence the plus in our name) who had voices worth listening to,  journalists would use them. So with no funding or staffing, but with an itch for change, I registered Quote This Woman+ as a non-profit. I have run the organisation as a freelancer, as a working mom juggling a chronic condition. Trigeminal neuralgia causes ongoing pain. I work with pain specialists to manage the disabling effects and am grateful for days when working is easy. My biggest support has come from my family: my daughter Jordan who graduated in 2018, has worked as a volunteer intern at QW+ almost since we launched.

A society without women’s voices is in danger

In October 2020, the International Women’s Media Foundation released a report showing South Africa was one of the worst of the six countries it surveyed in terms of amplifying women’s voices in the news. Despite the lobbying of QW+ and the access to our database, journalists and producers are allowing women’s voices to be left out of the narratives that are critical to allowing us to understand this pivotal moment in our history. Without these nuanced perspectives, how can we ensure that we make the right decisions going forward - the decisions that allow us to do things differently and not repeat past mistakes?

Why we aim to raise R55 000 by 30 November 2020

We want to raise R55 000 to launch QW+ into 2021. We need to fund grant applications, corporate presentations and the kilometres of lobbying and legwork to find sustainable funding models. We need to move to the next phase, and we need your help to do that.

Even small donations can make a difference! All donations are tax-deductible.

  • R50 buys a coffee and 150MB of data for a volunteer
  • R250 pays for 1 month of web-hosting
  • R500 lets us answer 1 media query
  • R1000 adds a new expert to the database

Quote This Woman+

Quote This Woman+ Logo

When it comes to the news, a woman is interviewed or quoted as a media expert only once for every four times that a man is. This means that time and again, stories that impact women as much as they impact men, are discussed on news panels and reported in newspapers without women having a chance to voice their input. QW+ curates a database of woman experts, leaders, and agitators; and lobbies journalists and news producers to turn to this database first when looking for people to interview and quote for their stories.

We also call out gender bias in news reporting. We are a nonprofit, and we do not charge experts to be on our database, nor do we charge journalists to access it, as we believe in a level playing field that advantages all experts and all journalists equally. We rely on support from those who have the means to pay; and the belief in what we do, to keep us afloat and sustainable in times ahead.
