#ReBuildASchool Campaign

Personal message

According to Equal Education there are over 400 schools in the Eastern Cape that are classified as “mud-schools”, many of them consisting of mud and shacks.

The crisis of education in South Africa remains the crisis of poor communities. #ReBuildASchool is an open call to everyone to assist in the journey to rebuild schools that have poor sanitation and infrastructure across in South Africa.

On the 15th of November 2017 we will officially launch the #ReBuildASchool project with the aim of raising funds for 3 months. This allow us to start building end of February 2018 with hopes to finish rebuiling by the start of winter 2018.

For the year 2018 #ReBuildASchool has decided to focus on two schools that are located in the rural Eastern Cape. The schools are:

  • Nzwakazi Primary School -  a public school located in Mqanduli. This has poor infrastructure and sanitation. The school was build by parents in 1968. There is no reliable water supply in this schools and they don't have an electricity. They are using a generator as a form of power supply.
  • Tolikana Primary School -  a public school located in Libode. The school is substantially made of mud (which is inappropriate according to the regulation relating to norms and standards). In addition the school has no proper sanitation.

#ReBuildASchool is built on the belief that in order for our country to thrive and be progressive it needs to achieve a successful education system.

Apartheid policies have left a legacy of large school infrastructure backlogs in black areas while provision in formerly white schools appears relatively lavish, with schools provided with well-equipped laboratories and qualified teachers. Similarly to the apartheid state, education for poor communities is far from ideal. Investments continue to be made in well-resourced areas rather than in the areas that actually need to be invested in.

#ReBuildASchool vows to advocate for a deep-seated educational change in South Africa.

Donations and funding towards #ReBuildASchool will utilised for

  • Infrastructure
  • Stationery
