'Help Up' River Cleanups

Personal message

We are raising funds for 'Help Up' - a group that organizes weekly cleanups in the Black River in Mowbray. The Black River is an urban river that drains into Table Bay and is heavily affected by litter and pollution.

Help Up have recruited a small number of homeless people from the area to come and clean the river - removing bags full of plastic rubbish that would otherwise be destined for the sea. The homeless workers are called Help Up Avatars and they are paid for their work cleaning the river every week.

My name is Alan, and I'm one of a group of volunteers that joins the Avatars on their cleanups. On a typical weekend cleanup there will be 4-6 people in the river and we take out about 50 bags (!!) full of rubbish.

The stuff that we pull out of the river is a disgusting mix of plastic bags, diapers, bottles, old clothing, polystyrene, chip packets, straws, wrappers, etc. Without the hard work of this team to take it out, it would all be washed into when it washes down into the sea.

Each cleanup event cost about R500. That goes mostly to paying the Help Up Avatars with a little bit for drinks, snacks, and transport.

1 cleanup removes 50 bags of rubbish - so it works out to around R10 per bag taken out! Bags are sponsored by Tuffy and the team does everything reasonable to keep costs to a minimum.

My goal is to raise enough funds to enable the Help Up team to cover their cleanups for the rest of 2019.

Please consider making a recurring monthly contribution - it makes it so much easier for the team to plan ahead. For example, for R200 a month, you would be sponsoring the removal of a carload (20 bags) of rubbish!

Funds will go to the founder and organizer-in-chief at Help Up, Georgia McTaggart, to distribute amongst volunteers. So if you care about stopping plastic pollution, but can't make it to a cleanup yourself, you can sponsor a Help Up Avatar and still do your bit!
