Rodgers Chinhangue (MP) - UWC Dilijan

Personal message

My name is Rodger Chinhangue and I am 16 years old. I live in SouthAfrica, Mpumalanga Province. Growing up, I enjoyed working with my father on repairing cars, electronics, and plumbing. A MacGyver at heart, I learned to work with my hands and found the creativity to fix just about anything broken (except when you are heart broken!). Working with my father in such projects have made me realize that I have to work for what I need in life. It also made me realize that it is never too early to pursue my passion.

My goal is to become a Mechatronic Engineer and I am passionate about energy and sustainability. I have been accepted to the United World College(UWC) of Dilijan in Armenia where I will be pursuing my International Baccalaureate Diploma. UWC’s campus in Armenia is set in the beautiful Dilijan National Park, providing students with a culturally authentic, yet high-caliber learning facility. The environmentally conscious setting provides the perfect platform for me to explore my interests in technology and nature, while I pursues my specialization in engineering.

I was drawn to UWC’s International Baccalaureate curriculum involving community action and service, as well as the idea of studying abroad because I strive to be supportive and help others as much as possible. I have been helping by involving myself in community services such as trash pick ups, volunteering at old age homes and fixing appliances for other people. In the future, my goal is to give back to my community, giving these experiences back to other people. In a nutshell, I want to should pay it forward. This will be through supporting youth led projects and linking young talented people with professionals who will support them.

I am always maintaining the top 10% on my grade. I was selected to join Imagine Scholar, a program that only takes best 10 students from the region for extra tutorial. I was part of the team that built an electric vehicle for a regional competition and won twice in consecutive years. I am part of the 200 students from the world who were selected to be part of a week long prestigious leadership program at Yale University in Singapore -Asia. My current long term project which I have designed and is approved by engineers, is to install solar power at Imagine Scholar. After finding that I have been accepted to the United World College, I gained more confidence and realized that all the support I receive is worth it.

In order for me to pursue my goal of attending UWC Diijan, I need your support. I have received a scholarship that covers my board and tuition but I still need R45 000,for flights, medical and other expenses for my first year, which the scholarship does not cover. My father is the only person who is employed and supports the whole family. Your financial support will be breaking the barrier that currently disables me from reaching my goal.

Thank you a lot.
