Personal message

My name is Ina, I am raising funds for my husband, Hein Putter. We are living in Kroonstad, Free state. Hein is 45 years old, and currently working at the correctional services as the switchboard operator.

My husband's story...

I've been a quadriplegic for 22 years because I broke my neck in a car accident.
I currently work at Correctional Services Kroonstad at the switchboard. I use an Electric Wheelchair and drive to work every day myself.

Two years ago I was very ill and had severe infections. Because of a germ I had, I broke both my legs. I was in the hospital for 5 months. When I started working again last January, I had severe pressure sores. All this because of my illness and because my legs were broken, I can no longer sit in my chair at all. The chair I use is also 8 years old and is a remodeled chair.

I was back in hospital last year for 3 months in Pretoria and underwent surgery to get the pressure ulcers healthy. I was admitted to the Rehabilitation Unit of the hospital and the team there helped me re-apply to my medical aid for a new electric wheelchair.

The new chair was specially prescribed for me because my legs broke and did not fully recover and I can no longer sit in a normal wheelchair at all.

I was discharged from the hospital last year at the end of June and we applied to the medical aid for a new wheelchair as well as a special cushion for the chair. The medical scheme informed me that there were not enough funds in the PMB department and I had to apply for Ex-Gratia. It was said it would
+ - 3 months before we get an answer.

I started working again last October and I am still using the old chair.
We asked the medical aid all the time to find out if there was any feedback but no feedback.
On April 5, 2019, the medical team informed us that there were funds. Then again there were problems between the provider and medical aid and it took a long time before they sorted it out.

In June, my old chair broke and it can't be fixed. I can't sit in an ordinary chair at all because my legs fall off and from then on my wife had to take me to work in the old electric chair every day. The chair is very heavy and I can't even get into the combi without at least 2 more people helping to get me in my own vehicle. I feel quite powerless because she literally does everything for me and I just depend on my chair to get somewhere myself.

It was a struggle just to get payments from the Medical and the last payment was made on September 27, 2019 for which I am very grateful.

Unfortunately, there is still an amount of R20 386 outstanding.

Today I would like to ask from my heart for any donation. I do not have the extra funds and have other medical expenses that we have been paying off for two years now.
It would be greatly appreciated if anyone could help us.

I will be able to get to work on my own and take the daily stress off my family. It is not always easy to keep your head up when bills just keep coming, but at least I will be able to cope better at my work and support my family!

R20 386 is still needed for the difference between the medical aid and the cost of the specialized chair.

If there is any additional funding it will be used to buy a special cushion for the chair.

Please follow Hein's progress here.
