Running for Balance

After working with young people in various capacities over the years I have begun to recognise that someone’s educational background plays only one part of their ability to achieve success. We send our children and young people into the world with all the necessary education behind them but leave them poorly equipped to deal with the emotional and self-esteem trials that life throws out. They are a generation facing an increasingly competitive job-market coupled with the obsessive self-comparison disorder of social media, resulting in a whirling destructive force of potential anxiety and depression.
I believe that is important that we not only provide our children with the educational tools that they need but that their creativity, emotional health and self-esteem is allowed to flourish by introducing them to the benefits of a balanced lifestyle. By living a healthy active lifestyle, they realize they have the potential to rise above their circumstances. They can become productive in their communities and that is good for everyone.
The Anna Foundation aims to provide children with much needed literacy and numeracy assistance, encourages a love for all kinds of sports and a healthy lifestyle as well as teaches children how to integrate these values into their everyday lives. By addressing the needs of rural children, a huge step is taken towards alleviating poverty in these areas.
The 3 R‘s: Reading, Running and Right-ing programme (Right-ing referring to ‘right living’) is implemented on farms, in rural schools and within other rural environments after school hours for children from Grade R to 12. The programme involves education, sports and life skills activities.
The Anna Foundation’s intention is to teach these children that through dedication, persistence and hard work each one can be a master of his or her own destiny.
To help raise awareness for the Anna Foundation and the wonderful work that they do, I am challenging myself to run 160km over the next month. That is at least 40km per week! You can sponsor per km or just a lump sum. Any amount, no matter how small, is welcomed.
The money that you donate will go towards addressing the educational and social needs of rural children and to offering these children life-long learning in order to build positive self-worth and self-respect. Funds will also be directed towards training women from the farms to run the Anna Foundation after-schools program, where they are empowered with skills which they can take back into their rural communities, ensuring sustainability.
Your support can help change the lives of children by offering them opportunities for life-long learning and helping them to build positive self-worth and self-respect.

The Anna Foundation is all about inspiring young people and providing them with opportunities. The organisation implements afterschool programmes on farms or rural low income schools in the Western Cape, currently in the municipal districts of Stellenbosch, Cape Town, Langeberg and the Overberg. The Anna Foundation aims to empower disadvantaged rural children with life skills and core values, building self-worth and self-responsibility. The organisation’s “3Rs programme: Reading, Running, Right-ing” is implemented during after school hours and incorporates education (literacy), sports (running, riding and sports development) and life skills programmes (presented through drama). Women and men from farming communities are trained by the Anna Foundation to run their 3R’s programme, and teenager and parent workshops are also provided.
