Update on Little Ryan (August 28th, 2020)

Dear Family and Friends,

It’s with a very heavy heart that I’m writing to let you know that our beautiful boy Little Ryan passed away on Sunday, August 23rd surrounded by his loving immediate family.

Although our hearts are very heavy, they’re also filled with deep love and appreciation that we got to share the past 6 years with him. The fond memories and love we have for him will be with us forever.

Thank you for being part of Ryan's journey. Your prayers, thoughts, kindness and generosity mean so much to us.

With love,

Bridgett ❤️ (Tony's sister) xoxo

Update on Little Ryan (August 19th, 2020)

Happy 6th Birthday Big Boy Ryan!

It's been a while since the last update but today cannot go by unnoticed as it's Ryan's 6th birthday!

The past few months have been gruelling for Ryan and his family. The arrival of Covid-19 in South Africa added to the already stressful situation as Ryan was still on a strict regime of chemotherapy and radiation and is immunocompromised. The tight Covid restrictions basically put South Africans on national lockdown from March 23rd and from then onwards only essential travel has been allowed with a permit.

Despite this, Tony and Charlotte made sure that Ryan was able to continue his regular, almost weekly sessions of chemotherapy and radiation. Given the increasing spread of the virus it was advised that Ryan spend as little time in hospital as possible. This meant that rather than being admitted into hospital, his chemo was sometimes administered in his oncologist's office and Charlotte took over the nursing duties of Ryan in a hotel room until he was deemed well enough to travel back home.

In true Ryan style, he typically bounced back to his busy, playful self within a few days of his treatment. During those times he visited the farm with Tony and Jade and spent time with his Granny and Grampsy. There has been lots of playing in the sand, playing school in the back yard and wait for this...Ryan learnt to drive the "Bushwacker" which is the ATV used to get around on the farm. It's been such fun for him to take the steering wheel and drive his wide-eyed passengers around!

Within days of the lockdown starting, the Burchell family moved into a bigger house. Not only is there more space for them to play in the backyard, it also means that now Ryan and Jade each have their own bedrooms! As a surprise, Charlotte put a huge mural of a unicorn on Jade's wall and did Ryan's room up in the theme of monkeys. (How very fitting!) The look on their faces and whoops of delight and appreciation when they opened their bedroom doors was priceless!

At the end of May Ryan completed almost 10 months of treatment. He arrived home to find that Jade and Tony had decorated the entrance of the house with stickers, balloons and a ribbon that needed to be cut in order for him to enter. He proudly cut the ribbon to mark the auspicious occasion of the end of his treatment and not having to go back to Johannesburg for a check up for another six whole weeks. To a family who have been on the move and separated from each other almost every week for a few days at a time, for months on end, this was a very big deal!

Ryan returned to doing what he usually did but under lockdown restrictions. After a few weeks he started to experience some pain and his gait seemed a bit off when walking. Although it was not quite time for his scheduled medical checkup, Tony and Charlotte arranged for Ryan to have scans in Johannesburg to establish what was causing his discomfort. The results were absolutely  devastating, within just a few weeks of stopping chemotherapy the cancer had spread into his pelvis, prostrate, liver and lungs.

The past few weeks have been a rollercoaster for Ryan's family. Consultations and collaborations with doctors in different parts of the world yielded the same dreaded diagnosis, every parent's worst nightmare, the cancer is back and more aggressive than ever. Options for further treatment have been thoroughly explored, including natural and holistic options, and although Ryan has a comprehensive treatment plan drawing from all resources, the focus is on keeping him comfortable and allowing him to do the things he enjoys when he feels able to. Being at home surrounded by those he loves is where Ryan is and his visits to the farm will continue whenever he feels up for it.

Moving forward, Ryan's family are taking one day at a time and today being Ryan's 6th birthday, the focus is on celebrating with him. Please join us in doing so by taking a moment to think about him and to send him and his family love and strength. Although Covid restrictions have meant that those who love him can't all be with him today, the power of love joins hearts no matter how far the distance and we appreciate your kind thoughts and positivity.

With love,

Bridgett  ❤️ (Tony's Sister)

Update on Little Ryan  (January 19th, 2020)

Happy New Year to you all!

These first few weeks of the new year have been a busy time for Ryan and his family and we have lots of good news to share with you!

Ryan has now completed his radiation treatment. After 36 sessions he finally got to put his ‘marker’ on the wall to show that he is all done! This is a celebration ritual at the hospital that children look forward to as it officially signals the end of their scheduled radiation treatment. He will still have tests done in the future to assess the efficacy of the radiation, but we happily celebrate this fantastic milestone with him!

Moving forward, Ryan will continue to have weekly chemotherapy in Johannesburg. His appointments are typically scheduled to happen on Fridays, and this means he is able to spend weekdays at home in Louis Trichardt. Tony and Charlotte will continue to take turns to drive him to Johannesburg for treatment until May, at which time Ryan's progress will be re-assessed.

Up to this point, Ryan’s oncologist has been very pleased with how he is responding. Although he experiences side-effects from the chemo and radiation, he remains upbeat and surprisingly, full of energy. He continues to swim, play and ride his scooter but his visits to public places have up until now been limited as a precaution. Given that his immune system has been compromised by the chemotherapy, his parents were advised to limit his contact with crowds of people. Along with this restriction, his food selection was also curtailed in attempt to reduce his risk of exposure to food borne bacteria. This has meant Ryan has mostly only eaten select foods that have been carefully prepared at home.

A few weeks ago, it was suggested that Ryan begin to reintegrate and start doing more common everyday activities. His family were delighted to take him out to a pizza restaurant where they all enjoyed ordering and eating a meal together. Following this, he has had a few other outings but the biggest surprise of all happened this past week…

On Wednesday, January 15th, Ryan attended his first day of Kindergarten! He was beyond excited to learn that he was going to attend school and on the first day he was up and dressed with his lunchbox packed, ready to rumble! The plan is for Ryan to attend school when he is feeling well enough. Fridays will be travel and chemo days, but on the other days of the week, Ryan gets to go to school and be with his friends and learn new things! Jade started her Gr 4 year in the same school and being the caring big sister she is, she makes sure to go and check up on how he is doing whenever she can.

As you can imagine, there has been much to celebrate in the past few weeks. It has been a wonderful start to the new year, and we continue to support Ryan and his family on their journey as they still have a very long road ahead of them. Medical bills and expenses continue to pile up and any support you can offer is much appreciated. As always, thank you for keeping Ryan in your thoughts and prayers.

With love,

Bridgett (Tony’s Sister)

Update on Little Ryan December 31st, 2019

As 2019 draws to a close I’d like to thank you on behalf of Ryan and our family for the kindness and support you’ve given us during the last few months.

The past few weeks have been a busy time for Ryan, his parents and sister. Charlotte and Jade have continued to spend most weekdays in Johannesburg with Ryan who has endured daily radiation and weekly chemotherapy. Tony has driven four hours from the farm on most weekends to join them at the apartment complex where they sometimes stay.

During one of the visits to the pool at the apartments, Ryan and Jade befriended a lady who was also enjoying a swim. Being very open and chatty children, the kids started talking to her and asked her name. Cris took an instant liking to Ryan and Jade and over the next few days met with them to play at the pool. When she learnt more about Ryan’s diagnosis and his grueling treatment schedule, she took him under her wing. Up until then, Cris was just a kind lady they had met at the pool but then Ryan told his dad that “Cris fights in a cage.” Although this didn’t mean much to them at the time, after a little more conversation it became apparent that their new friend has millions of fans around the world as she is the mixed martial arts fighter ‘Cris Cyborg’ who is currently in South Africa training for a fight taking place in LA, in January.

Not only has Cris been a playmate at the pool, she’s accompanied Ryan to his radiation treatment in hospital and has invited him to ‘train’ with her at the gym and has introduced Ryan to a few pro MMA moves! The look on his face while working out with Cris says it all. They have formed a special bond and in Cris’ words, “…he’s won my heart! We will be together in this battle my little friend.” #PrayForRyan

Ryan’s treatment plan was adjusted to accommodate him going home to Louis Trichardt to spend six whole days with his family over Christmas. This was the longest stretch they’ve been together for months. They celebrated Christmas with Granny and Grampsy and also managed a few visits to the farm where Ryan got to check on the crops and drive the tractor (with a little assistance, of course!).

Ryan’s radiation treatment will end on January 6thand then he will continue with weekly chemotherapy until May 2020. As you will see, his smile is as big as ever but the last few weeks have been hard on his little body.

As we move into the New Year please keep Ryan and his family in your thoughts and prayers and if you feel moved to share or contribute to Ryan’s Backabuddy fund, and enormous thank you for your kindness.

Wishing you all a very Happy and Healthy New Year.

With love, Bridgett (Tony’s Sister)

Update on Little Ryan (November 26th, 2019)

Last week Ryan completed his first round of targeted radiation treatments on his chest. Being the brave little boy he is, Ryan continues to impress and win the hearts of those who are treating him. He readily hops up onto the treatment bed and positions himself in a ‘body cast’ which has been molded to his shape to keep him still while radiation is administered.

As you may be aware, no one can be in the room with him when he receives radiation treatment. For many children this would be extremely upsetting but Ryan is taking it in his stride. His mom, Charlotte, being the resourceful lady she is, came up with the idea of reading to him on the intercom to keep him engaged and give him a sense of comfort when he receives the radiation. They are currently reading ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’ and he is enjoying the story very much!

Ryan needs to be in Johannesburg from Monday to Friday in order to receive his radiation and chemotherapy. He and Charlotte returned home for the weekend this past week and spent some time with Tony and Jade. On Saturday Ryan visited the farm to see his Granny and Grampsy and despite having a week of radiation and chemo treatment, he was full of energy and smiles. He rode his mini motorbike like a champion and swam with his dad, Tony. As usual, Granny made him his favourite foods and he ate very well. If that wasn’t enough, it’s mango season on the farm and Ryan is apparently steadily ‘eating up the profits!’

This week Ryan is undergoing his second round of radiation treatments. Jade has been able to join Ryan and Charlotte in Johannesburg this week as her school year has come to a close. Despite all the disruption to her routine, Jade received a wonderful school report card and we’re all so very proud of her hard work and perseverance. Tony will be joining his family in JHB this weekend as Ryan will be receiving his 19thchemotherapy treatment.

As always, your interest and support mean the world to Ryan and his family. We’re fast approaching the halfway mark of the target goal amount (just as Ryan approaches the halfway mark of his treatment schedule!) We wouldn’t have made it to this point without your kindness and generosity.

Thank you all so very much.

With love and appreciation,

Bridgett (Tony’s Sister)

Udate on Little Ryan (13 November 2019)

For the first time in months Ryan’s had a break from chemo and hasn't had to travel to Johannesburg for treatment these past two weeks.

During his 'time off', Ryan was well enough to attend a school concert and he was so very excited to see his sister Jade on stage! He also spent a few days each week going out on the farm with his Dad, Tony. Ryan likes to inspect the crops in the fields and check that the workers are doing a great job packing produce in the shed. He spent time with Granny baking banana muffins and he and Grampsy enjoyed a swim as it’s been so very hot. Ryan’s been a bundle of energy and has eaten like a horse!

This past Saturday, Ryan attended a community golf day raising funds for children with cancer. He walked his Granny off her feet insisting that she see the tent where the drinks and food were being served!

It's been wonderful for Ryan and his family to enjoy doing these ordinary things that so many of us take for granted.

Starting this week, Tony, Charlotte and Jade will be taking Ryan back to JHB where he will be having daily radiation in addition to his chemotherapy.

Five days a week he will receive treatment and then, as long as he is well enough to travel, they'll make the 4-5 hour trip back home to Louis Trichardt each weekend, and then do it all again the following week.

This will be their routine until the new year.

Thank you all so very much for your kind words and generous donations. The fund has already reached just over 40% of the target.

Please continue to keep Ryan and our family in your hearts and prayers.

With love, Bridgett (Tony's Sister)

Update on Little Ryan (23 October 2019)

Just two weeks ago Ryan underwent surgery to remove the malignant tumor he calls his paw-paw (papaya). The chemotherapy he has endured over the past three months shrunk his tumor to an operable size and it was successfully removed. His doctors, family and friends are very pleased with the outcome as the histology report indicates there are no living cancer cells in the mass removed.

Ryan stayed in the ICU for a few days before being moved to a recovery ward. He was discharged after six days and went home to Louis Trichardt for a few days before returning back to Johannesburg to have another round of chemotherapy.

This last round was particularly hard on his post-surgery little body but being the brave boy he is, he hasn’t lost his smile.

The road ahead is still a very long one…

In addition to weekly chemotherapy, Ryan will have 36 sessions of radiation to target spots on his pelvic bone, heart and lungs. This will mean additional time spent away from home as his treatment schedule requires him to be in Johannesburg for extended visits.

Thank you so very much for your kindness and support.
Please continue to keep him and his family in your thoughts and prayers.

Please check back for updates as I'll be posting regularly.

With love, Bridgett (Tony's Sister)

Original Message:

Hi, my name is Kathryn Straughan and I am making an appeal for help on behalf of my dear friends, Charlotte and Tony Burchell who live in Louis Trichardt, South Africa.

Their 5-year-old son Ryan has been diagnosed with stage IV Rhabdomyosarcoma - an aggressive and highly malignant form of cancer that develops from skeletal muscle cells that have failed to fully differentiate. Ryan has a tumour in his pelvis that he calls the 'pawpaw' (papaya) because of its size. He has been having chemotherapy for the past few months to shrink the tumour so it can be removed by surgery.

Ryan is an incredible kid. He is so kind-hearted and he'll give you his last Rolo (chocolate candy). He is super active and intelligent and loves being busy. He is adventurous and a complete social butterfly and knows how to charm the girls. He is incredibly close to his big sister, Jade, who absolutely adores him.

Tony and Charlotte are doing everything they possibly can to help Ryan fight this disease. Charlotte is a chiropractor and has put her practice on hold to take care of Ryan full time. Tony is a farmer and is balancing his duties while also taking care of his family. Funding Ryan's medical costs have become a huge strain on them.

I am hoping that together we can raise as much as possible to help with the costs of Ryan's surgery and those associated with getting him to his treatment. Once a week they drive four hours from Louis Trichardt to Johannesburg and then back home again. All contributions will go a long way to helping them manage the mounting costs. Once Ryan's surgery has been completed, he will continue to have weekly chemotherapy until April 2020.

Your donation, big or small, will go towards helping Ryan get the treatment he needs to fight this cancer and to support his loving parents to meet the enormous costs involved in getting their son the quality care he needs. Little Ryan is a real fighter and has been incredibly brave so far.

Please help however you can. Every cent really does count. Every kid deserves a happy, healthy life and Ryan just wants to be that kid again.

All money raised will go into an account in Ryan's name and will be used towards his medical costs and associated travel expenses.

Funds raised will be paid directly into the beneficiary's bank account.

With appreciation,

Hi, my name is Kathryn Straughan and I am making an appeal for help on behalf of my dear friends, Charlotte and Tony Burchell who live in Louis Trichardt. Their 5-year-old son Ryan has been diagnosed with stage IV Rhabdomyosarcoma - an aggressive and highly malignant form of cancer that develops from skeletal muscle cells that have failed to fully differentiate.
