Dala What You Must

Dala is a word of Zulu origin meaning ‘to do’ used extensively in the Kaapse Language. Gardens, Cape Town

In 2022, I am going to row across The Atlantic Ocean.

More people have climbed Everest.

I will become the first African person of colour to row any ocean, solo.

This, in an attempt to break the World Record for the furthest row of 5030 Nautical Miles: leaving from Cape Town, crossing the Atlantic and making landfall in Barbados. The voyage will probably take longer than 100 days at sea. Alone.

Raised on stories of adventure and exploration, there was never a Plan B for me. My vivid imagination as a child, and now, have allowed me to go where ever, and be whomever, I dreamt of. From working as a photojournalist in conflict zones in Libya, Syria and Palestine, to making an Atlantic Crossing on a sailboat, to climbing El Capitan in California – adventures have guided me through my life.

This expedition has two aims.

One: I want to see what I’ve got. How far can I go? The call to press on and adventure harder grows stronger and louder each day. It started as a whisper in childhood, and now, it is deafening.

Two: We need, and have to, address the lack of representation and diversity. I do not see myself represented in the outdoors or the adventure space. Where there is a lack of representation, I choose to be it.

To me, representation works in two ways: to give people like me an example of what they (we) can do and be. And I believe it is also important for everyone to see what people like me can do.

So what am I asking for?

I am asking you to join the adventure. To come on the adventure with me - follow me, support me, share in my adventure. But also, choose to assist me in making the opportunity to change the narrative and to be the representation that is non-existent.

R500,000 ($35,000) will help me to get my boat: an epoxy ocean rowing boat built by ocean rower and master yacht builder, Wayne Robertson (based on a design by Phil Morrisson). If possible, I’d like to have it designed locally.

R200,000 will get me all the toys to keep me alive: the navigation systems; water maker and then some.

Would you like to be part of this expedition?

Whilst any and all contributions help, $250(R3800.00) will get your name/name of a loved one printed on the side of my boat.

My boats name, Dala.
