YFU Fundraiser: Help Rynette beat GBS!

Personal message

“Even if you just change one life, you’ve changed the world forever.” – Mike Satterfield

There are many different kinds of heroes in our world. There are those who stand in the spotlight, mobilize the masses, push for big reforms or appear on the front pages of newspapers. And then there are the other heroes. The humble and almost invisible ones who prefer to stay in the background but who end up touching and changing many lives in their own, special and powerful way.

Rynette Scholtz, affectionately known as ‘Mamma Nettie’, is the second kind of hero. She has been a part of our YFU family for over a decade, she has hosted countless students and interns from all over the world, and without her, YFU South Africa would not be what it is today. Many young people from all over the world have found a second mother in Mamma Nettie and she has touched the lives of more students, volunteers, interns and host families than we can count.

Unfortunately, even heroes are sometimes struck by misfortune and suddenly find themselves in unexpected situations, having to rely on the help of others. On 11 January, Rynette was admitted to hospital after a seemingly harmless illness. A few days later she was transferred to the Intensive Care Unit. The diagnosis: Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS), a rare disorder in which the immune system attacks the body’s nervous system, leading to partial or full paralysis of the body.

Fortunately, most people eventually recover from even the most severe cases of GBS. However, the recovery process is long and slow, usually taking several months and in some cases even years. And while South Africa has excellent medical facilities and rehabilitation centres, medical care – especially over long periods of time – is expensive.

While we don’t know when Rynette will be walking, cooking, joking and hugging us again, we know that we can – and will – be there for her every step of the way. We will probably never be able to repay her for all the love, kindness, time and energy she has given to YFU and the many students, interns and volunteers who have passed through her home over the years. But we can make sure that she receives the best possible medical care and rehabilitation throughout her healing and recovery process.

As the saying goes, when you fall in life, your family catches you and stands you back up. As Rynette’s YFU Family, let’s join forces and let’s do our part in making sure she makes a full recovery without having to deal with the additional pressure of hospital bills or having to opt for the ‘second-best’ treatment because of financial concerns.

Many of us would probably like to buy her flowers or a present to be put in her hospital room, take her out for dinner or a coffee once she feels better, or perhaps even buy a plane ticket to go and visit her from the other side of the world. Instead, we would like to ask you to put the amount you would have spent on flowers, presents, dinner or even that plane ticket towards her medical bills.

All funds raised through this campaign will be given directly to Rynette and her family to support her during the long – but hopefully successful – road to recovery. If you would like to send a personal greeting, picture or other sign of love to Rynette in addition to your contribution, please send them to Lena@yfu.org.za and we will pass them on.
