Salon Imme Lockdown rescue plan

Personal message

My name is Brenda Hughes and I have been a client of Imme Bohm, (Salon Imme) for many years. I am raising funds for Imme, who works for herself, and at the age of 73 this August, has spent 54 years of her life dedicated to the beauty industry.

Imme is a professional skin hygienist and beauty therapist, specialising in acne and other problem skin conditions. Imme is German trained having lived there in her 20's. Despite contracting polio as a youngster, Imme has never let her disability stop her from earning her own keep. She has raised 2 young girls as a single mom, worked hard, day in and day out for decades, with the highest work ethic and fastidious commitment to standards and procedures.

For Imme, her facial treatments are ideal for work, as Post-Polio Syndrome in her later years, has seen the need for Imme to walk with a crutch. This has not  hampered her skilled hands working magic on many an acne or troubled skin. Her clients have supported her for decades, some of them spanning generations with mother, granny and grandchildren all visiting Imme monthly for their wonderful facial solution or beauty treatments. Imme's loyal clients travel from far to make sure they have the best hands in the land looking after them. Some, having left SA, still make sure they include a stop at Salon Imme on their return visits to catch a much-needed treatment with her unique skill and expertise.

Imme's story: On 27 March 2020, my life took an unexpected turn as Covid-19 and Lockdown Level 5 kicked in and put my hands in handcuffs! For the past 54 years, I have supported myself, and brought up two daughters, solely on the income I have earned as a skin hygienist and beauty therapist. I have been fortunate to build up a very loyal client base over the years, who hold me in high regard for my knowledge and professionalism.

However, today, I am prohibited from earning a living, and not allowed to do what I love doing the most - my facials. My hands are now in shackles, ..... my hands which have successfully guided me through my life in doing the profession which I am so passionate about, are now not allowed to work!! And the result is - no income! This is very very scary for me as I near the end part of my career, as the loss of income impacts my ability to provide for myself in the future when I may be unable to work as many hours as I do now.

My industry can only return to work under of Lockdown Level 1. When will that be?? How much longer will I have to wait before I will be able to earn an income? How will I pay my 2 staff that help me to clean and maintain my house and salon. So much is unknown! As a result, I am reaching out to friends and clientele to ask for help in bridging this difficult and uncertain time. Please consider backing my business, with whatever you can give. I would be most grateful for all and any financial support. Once this difficult time is in the past, I promise to show my gratitude for your contribution in keeping my business afloat.

Any contribution will mean Imme will be able to pay her living expenses. Thinking that she had at least 2 years of income-earning months ahead of her still, Imme has a small bond left on her house that she needs to cover, as well as the upkeep of her house and her staff who help her to cope with the maintenance and cleaning of her much loved home salon.

She never anticipated a situation where she would NOT be allowed to trade, to earn an income. She has her medical aid to cover which is vital with her Post Polio Syndrome. She has a great motorised scooter for shopping when walking with her crutch would be too uncomfortable and limiting. Although her needs are frugal, she still needs about R25 000 a month to cover her expenses.

As a single mother, earning only from working in her salon, she was able to buy her own small house 18 odd years ago and has been very disciplined and modest in her approach to life and her upkeep. Never idle, never lazy, Imme has worked day in and day out to support herself, and has no other form of income, other than that she earns from looking after her loyal clients.

Imme has her medical aid contribution to cover every month, food and living expenses, as well as a small bond on her house. She has an automatic car and a motorised scooter that she uses for shopping, that she needs to maintain. She has 2 parttime staff members who have worked for her for years to help her to maintain and clean her house, garden and salon. Imme is hoping that Level 1 lockdown, won't be more than 2 months away so was hoping to receive enough contributions to fund her modest living expenses for the next few months.
