Samora CAN soup kitchen

Personal message

Covid-19.
South Africa has been in lockdown since the end of March.

This measure, put in place to save lives, hits the poor and unemployed especially hard.

During this time Ubuntubethu volunteers initiated a Community Action Network CAN group in Samora Machel, a self-organised support system aimed at mitigating the impact of the crisis.

We set up hand washing facilities, disseminate information, run a main soup kitchen and two satellite sites, cycle the area to deliver food and tablets to people that cannot leave the house, and at the same time check in with vulnerable members of the community.

We invite our friends and supporters to make a donation so that we can continue to deliver 130-150 meals per day, helping people to overcome this difficult time.

What the funds will buy: food items for the soup kitchen, airtime and data to stay connected, soap, sanitiser and cleaning products.

UBUNTU-BETHU is a non-governmental organization founded in 2016 and based in Samora Machel, an underserved area part of Cape Town, South Africa which presents a mix of formal and informal settlements. It has been established to support the social and educational needs of children, to promote arts and culture and to assist the most vulnerable members of the community. Ubuntu-Bethu also aims at promoting social cohesion, ‘Ubuntu’ (“I am because we are”), and the respect of human rights within the community regardless of gender, race, nationality and age.

The organization is rooted in the four core values of equality, sustainability, Ubuntu and empowerment. Equality: in all the work we do, we bring our best values, caring for everybody and giving our best performance and discipline for social justice for all. Ubuntu: we embody the principle of Ubuntu by living for one another and putting the needs of the community first. Sustainability: we keep the future in mind whatever we do and work towards a community that stands free from the chains of poverty. Empowerment: we will always strive to empower children and youth with the tools and knowledge to be independent.
