Sara Alleluia

Personal message

My name is Sara Marta Alleluia. I was born as a refugee in South Africa, on the 24th December 1995 in Groote Schuur Hospital. I was issued with an unabridged birth certificate which was incorrect. My surname was spelled incorrectly and my mother’s place of birth was stated as Uganda. This has proven to be an insurmountable obstacle.

My struggle to have my unabridged birth certificate corrected started when I was in grade 9 in 2010 and I am still fighting for it. I cannot count how often I have been to Home Affairs. I have called, spoken to people, organizations that said that they can help to no avail. When going to Home Affairs or filling in forms that would ask for my nationality made me so anxious.

In 2013, I was valedictorian and matriculated at Belhar High School with a Bachelors pass and obtained 3 distinctions. I have completed 3 years at Cape Peninsula University of Technology for my B.Ed. degree in Education. I did complete my third year in 2016 but was not accredited for it because I was declared stateless, even though I was born in South Africa. It was very hard to stop my studies; I tried everything in my power.

I am currently in my last year to obtain my degree and become a teacher. I want to be a teacher, who wants to challenge learners to become as great as they can be.
