Sarie Vermeulen

Personal message

Hi, My name is Tiny. I am attempting to crowdfund for my wife Sarie Vermeulen from Heidelberg Gauteng Province.

My wife has been ill for the last 12 years of her life. After conceiving our daughter there were complications involving septicemia which created a lot of other problems. She has been in and out of hospital many many times, she had stomach surgery, umbilical hernia complications where they had to remove the belly button. complications leading to endometriosis surgery and thereafter two more surgeries with the last one being a hysterectomy. She has had chronic lung problems from all the anaesthesia and one lung has collapsed at a point which still has complications up to today. Her gallbladder has been removed as well. She has not had one day of good health in the last 12 years of her life and has developed a chronic serious depression leading to further challenges on our paths.

She has been diagnosed with Hashimoto's thyroiditis a few years ago that was caused by cysts on her thyroid, she had to undergo surgery again to remove part of the thyroid in order to still have normal functionality and hormone levels.  A few months afterwards the same symptoms showed up again and we decided to get a second opinion from a well-known surgeon in Alberton at the Clinton Clinic. We consulted with him and he referred a physician and endocrinologist as well to help with this matter. After careful evaluation, they decided that the remaining part of the thyroid needed to be removed as well as it was then contaminated with more cysts. She underwent surgery again. After the surgery, she came and we trusted that the nightmare was over. To our shock it has only just started, she fainted...had tremendous fever attacks during the night for weeks on end, she ended up in the local Hospital Life Suikerbosrand numerous times with high infection counts and inflammation counts, high blood pressure etc. for weeks on end.

The local Doctor transferred her back to Clinton Hospital to be observed by the specialists. After hundreds of tests were done they diagnosed her with Addison's disease, which was, of course, a tremendous shock to us as its something you do not expect. She was placed on extremely high doses of cortisone to stabilize her cortisol levels and was sent home with hundreds of cortisone pills to take daily. This treatment had its own side effects and has done more bad than good. After ending up in Sunward park Hospital in Boksburg with an emergency another endocrinologist tested again and found that she was misdiagnosed and took her off the cortisone immediately, she also stopped most of the medication she was on at that point as it all worked against each other. She came home feeling a lot better but not well yet. She was struggling with depression even worse as she`s been in and out of hospital sometimes twice a month. it went well for maybe a month and the same symptoms started again, only know she had constant pneumonia, a heavily inflamed throat with constant infection and swollen glands in her neck and arms. As soon as the medication stopped the infection came back again. She was admitted to Clinton hospital again and the surgeon performed a Gastroscopy and found that the has a Hiatus hernia that is causing stomach acid to rise up at night burning her oesophagus causing her lungs to be inflamed and everything up to her sinus canals and ear canals to become infected and sometimes her throat even septic. According to the surgeon, an operation to repair the problem is needed quite urgently as that will eliminate a lot of problems, helping her to regain her health and become a mom again. Over the years these medical bills have cost us hundreds of thousands of rands, not only for medical but for fuel, someone to look after our daughter, special diets, aftercare etc.

I myself am not very healthy and have had 5 heart attacks in between related to stress, I got diabetes as well 24 years ago so the stressful situation has claimed its toll on me as well. My daughter has also gone through a very very difficult time up to know as most of her memories of her childhood involve her mother being sick or in hospital. I manage my own business but with the economy not being in a good state these days things are not going well. I haven`t paid my daughter`s school fees in two years as I simply cannot afford to, she is such a striving girl and I would hate to have her embarrassed by something like this.we do have a medical but could not pay for December as my funds have run completely dry and will need to pay for January and February as well in order for my wife to go for the operation. Medical costs have physically bankrupted us by now and I simply do not know where to turn to. I have also applied for permanent work to get a more stable income but no success up to know. I am emotionally and physically tired and drained and only wish and plead for help to get us through this time so my wife can regain her health.

If the campaign is successful it will give her another chance to overcome this obstacle and function normally and help financially as she cannot work due to her health at this point. It will help to make the load a bit lighter in life and at home. And also it will give my daughter her mom back so they can do things together again, enjoy life together and give her the confidence that her mom is healthy and well again.

Funds raised will be used to cover:
Bonitas Medical Fund R18200 (Dec to Feb)
Fuel costs, aftercare R 5000
Laer Volkskool Heidelberg R20500

*As per the campaign creator's request, where possible, funds raised will be transferred directly to the relevant organisation/professional.*
