In 2014, my partner and I put together everything we had & purchased a lush lucerne farm in Ladismith, Western Cape, little knowing we had just entered into the beginnings of the worst drought in over 200 years. We were debt free. We were going to feed the world with our free-range and organic produce.
Within 6 weeks of moving here the water STOPPED.
From the lush lucerne depicted in the picture from Nov 2014, to the arid desert we have now exactly four years later. In 2015 we put the farm on the market.
We have sold all of our assets, all our livestock, we only have hens left. We have gone without, we have defaulted on so many things, owe so much money to friends, family and the bank, which is now threatening to foreclose. Our farm worker has not been paid.
We scrape together a small income from our olive trees and our organic veg, a solar panel and pump were donated to us to get some water running without Eskom expense. Once again we had a tiny bit of hope.
On Friday, our borehole ran dry!
Today I am a broken person, swallowing my pride and asking for help, from random strangers who are also struggling, to gather funds to sink a new borehole and put in a solar system, maybe even pay off a bit of our Eskom acc to try to save our little farm, with the promise to pay it forward!
