Save Langebaan Lagoon

Personal message

Save Langebaan Lagoon Action Group,  a registered NGO and formally constituted legal entity, was formed in February 2017.

It is our mission to protect the ecology and beauty of the world-renowned Langebaan Lagoon. The

Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF) has authorised an 884 Hectare sea-based Finfish and Bivalve Aquaculture Development Zone (ADZ) in Saldanha Bay and our lagoon waters.

How big is the  ADZ exactly?

278 Hectares of open water FISH CAGES farming ALIEN FINFISH

606 Hectares of wooden rafts and long-lines farming Mussels & Oysters

Did you know- one Hectare equals the size of a RUGBY field!

What are the threats?

  • Destruction of the sea life below the farmed areas ( “ dead zones “ are found below cages and rafts)
  • Introduction of diseases from alien fish species and sea lice as well as chemical and antifouling agents, antibiotics and hormones in the water all negatively affecting local wild fish.
  • Entrapment of seabirds in nets
  • Long-term damage to micro & macro Fauna in lagoon leading bird population decline
  • The attraction of Seals & Sharks to the Fin Fish Cages
  • Smelly beaches, unsightly vistas and plastic pollution from farming

What are we fighting to protect?

  • The health of the bay and Lagoon and its marine habitat
  • RAMSAR internationally accredited Wetland and Marine Protected Area
  • Top South African water-sport destination and internationally renowned Kite Surfing destination.
  • 70% of the jobs in Langebaan rely on the health and beauty of the lagoon.
  • Our right to a clean environment.

How do we “ fight “?

Legally: Save Langebaan Lagoon will take the battle to High Court to challenge and stop the authorization by the DEA.

We require major funding to take this important case on judicial review, estimating our legal costs to be approximately R 1.8 million.

Emotionally: By informing the public and spreading the message to family and friends.
