Winston Jefferson is my pet pot belly of 1.5 years old. He is the sweetest gentleman and all those who meet him fall in love immediately. I rescued him at 10 weeks old from a lady who could not keep him in her apartment.
On the 16th October we had a big storm and he must have got spooked by either the thunder or lightning because I heard him scream at around 10.30pm. When I found him outside he was on the ground and unable to get up. He had lost the use of his back legs. We brought him inside and I injected him with an anti-inflammatory and tried to get him settled for the night until I could get him to Onderstepoort in the morning. They did the x-rays on Monday morning and called me with the awful news..... he had a badly fractured last lumbar vertebrae. It looked like it had actually imploded. It seems that he slipped in the mud.
I was told that he had no real chance of survival and I should euthanize him. I was totally devastated. I decided to send his x-rays to a couple of vets and surgeons around the country for a second opinion. I then came across Dr Adriaan Kitshoff at Valley farm animal clinic. He said he thought there was a chance of recovery but could only be sure once a CT scan had been done. I then arranged the scan at OP and dropped the disk off for Dr Kitshoff. The next 3 days were spent waiting for the phone to ring. Finally he called to say that he was willing to operate using human titanium plates and screws. I got on the phone and couldn't believe when someone I know from a FB pig group (another piggy mom) told me she might be able to arrange the plates at cost. I was elated. She then let me know the next day that the company who makes the plates actually offered them free... they were donating them. I was beyond happy and felt so blessed.
Then I got the call about the operation. It had to take place the next day because Dr Kitshoff was going away on Saturday. The quote was R40000. I had to come up with a R15000 deposit by the next morning. I have been unemployed for 7 months..... what were the chances? Well, I never give up. I got on the phone and beg, stole and borrowed (and sold a few items) and managed to get the money together. On Friday morning I took my boy to the hospital for his surgery.
The surgery was done and was a great success. Winston got through it really well. He is currently still at the hospital having daily physio and getting some much needed rest. The next 6 weeks will be very telling as to how much damage was done but the surgeons seem very optimistic
Unfortunately, due to my financial circumstances because I am unemployed I am not able to cover the full hospital and surgery fees. I need to rely on donations.
