I am Shafic Nsereko (23 years old, from Pretoria, Gauteng). I am an ambitious and passionate student of B(ENG) CIVIL at University of Pretoria. I am currently a second year student, I am humbly begging for financial assistance in order for me to be able to complete my studies successfully
My goal is to join a dynamic company and become a great asset in the industry by becoming a great civil and structural engineer through production of innovative Ecofriendly iconic structures.
After I matriculated in 2014, I didn’t have enough finances for university and because I was a foreigner, I couldn’t get government funding to pursue my studies at the university on an asylum permit. I therefore decided to take two years off and try to work on funding to pursue my degree. I worked part time at a retail store in Johannesburg in 2015 while I also joined Jeppe College to pursue N4-N6 certificates in civil engineering. The administration at Jeppe College was kind enough to allow me study with subsidized fees on the basis thatI had good grades in high school.
At the end of 2016 after acquiring N4-N6 civil engineering certificates, I then decided to get another odd job to try to save up for my degree throughout 2017 as well as rewriting some of the subjects from my matric that could allow me to pursue my degree.
In 2017 I applied at the University of Pretoria to pursue my degree in engineering and I was accepted for the 2018 program. Even though I was accepted, I still didn’t know how to pay since throughout all my studies of the past four years I was self-funding based on the odd jobs I was doing and I didn’t have enough money to save.
At the beginning of my program in 2018, I was able to register for my degree with the help of my friends in South Africa who gave me some soft loans so that I could register and pursue my dream.
So I have struggled to hold down a job of cleaning and continue pursuing my degree due to the intensity required in studying for engineering. My employers advised me to focus on my studies and I have not been able to have stable earning to help me pay tuition.
Reaching my target will mean that I can now fulfill my childhood dream of becoming a Civil engineer and a great asset to help my mum and family from generations long poverty. Plus I'll be able to also help people under the same conditions I've been through so that they can also attain their dreams hence Uplifting Africa.
*As per the campaign creator’s request, funds raised will be paid directly to the University of Pretoria*
